The Helen S Kaman Rose Garden is the center of Elizabeth Park. It is the first municipal rose garden in the United States and the third largest rose garden in the country today. Theodore Wirth began the design of the Rose Garden in September of 1903, and it opened in June,1904.
GENERAL INFORMATION, REGULATIONS, AND ACCESSIBILITY Grilles, fires, alcohol, and portable radios are not allowed. Groups of 50+ people must secure a permit from the City of Hartford to picnic or hold another outdoor event in the Park. Please fill out an application, or contact Kylah Hudson at 860.757.9526 or kylah.hudson@hartford.gov. The Ponds, Ducks and Geese. WHAT’S BLOOMING WHEN A rule of thumb for flowers at Elizabeth Park: the tulips are out around Mother’s Day, the roses are out around Father’s day, and the park is beautiful every day. The roses bloom until early fall and the annuals bloom from June until the first frost. The heritage roses bloom once in early June. The perennial and shade garden bloom at various times between late May and September. SPRING GREENHOUSE BULB AND PLANT SALE Bulbs and plants may be purchased by CREDIT CARD or CHECK only. Visitors are asked to bring their own trays, boxes or carts to carry away their plant purchases. The Spring Greenhouse Sale helps support Elizabeth Park Conservancy in its mission to maintain, restore and protect the gardens, grounds and buildings in Elizabeth Park.POND HOUSE CAFÉ
Pond House Café. The Pond House Café, located within the Park, is a top dining destination in Hartford, with an eclectic and creative cuisine. The focus on local, fresh and organic ingredients can be seen as you stroll by their vegetable and herb gardens on the grounds. To arrange a private tour for a group, ABOUT THE CONSERVANCY The Elizabeth Park Conservancy was formed in 1977, as the Friends of Elizabeth Park, by a small group of dedicated neighbors, both urban and suburban, to save the historic rose garden from almost certain demolition. After 35 years of preserving and maintaining, restoring and protecting, not only the rose garden, but also all gardens, grounds and buildings, the organization changed its name to TREES OF ELIZABETH PARK The property has been transformed from a bucolic country estate to a municipal botanic garden, including many fine trees and shrubs. Tree species include: shagbark hickory, Katsura (a native of Japan), black birch, golden larch, kousa dogwood, and weeping blue spruce. The oldest trees are the oaks. Several of the trees in the Park are StatePERENNIAL GARDEN
Perennial Garden. The original Perennial Garden was created between 1911 and 1914 under the direction of Park Superintendent George Parker. HORTICULTURAL GARDENS The Conservancy collaborates with several horticultural groups who design, plant, and maintain gardens in the park. It is a great working relationship. We get a maintained garden, which we could not otherwise have, and the organization gets a public place to showcase their work. Their members maintain their gardens and are happy to answer questions about their organization and their gardens. CHARLES AND ELIZABETH POND Charles Murray Pond passed away in 1894, just three years after his wife, Elizabeth, who died at the age of 51. The couple had no children. His gift to the city included 90 acres of land, along with a generous fund of $100,000 for the layout, care, and maintenance of apublic park.

POND HOUSE - ELIZABETH PARK The Elizabeth Pond Memorial Building, called the Pond House, today is home to the Pond House Café. It is managed by a private restaurant company. It was built in 1959 in a “contemporary style” to replace the original c. 1870 Victorian Pond mansion as a community center and place for visitors to rest, use bathrooms, and have a snack.GARDEN TOURS
