OMV gearing up for North Sea well OMV gearing up for North Sea well The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has granted OMV a drilling permit for a wildcat well in the North Sea offshore Norway. The well 1/3-13 will be drilled from the Maersk Integrator jack-up drilling rig. OMV has already gained consent from Norway’s Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) to use the Maersk Integrator rig for this well. The drilling programme for well 1/3-13 relates to the drilling of a wildcat well in production licence 970. OMV (Norge) is the operator of the licence with an ownership interest of 60 per cent. Other licensees are Petoro (20 per cent) and Neptune Energy Norge (20 per cent). The area in this licence consists of part of block 1/3. The well will be drilled about 6 kilometres south of the Oselvar field and 25 kilometres south of the Ula field. Production licence 970 was awarded on 1 March 2019 (APA2018) and this is the first exploration well to be drilled in the licence. OMV hired the Maersk Integrator rig for an exploration well in Norway back in December 2020. The rig was hired to drill one exploration well in the Ommadawn prospect in the production license 970 in the North Sea. The contract is expected to start in mid-2021 with an estimated duration of 52 days. The post OMV gearing up for North Sea well appeared first on Global Energy News.

IEA: ‘Recovery in clean energy spending not enough to reach netzero’
IEA: ‘Recovery in clean energy spending not enough to reach netzero’
Energy spending is forecast to recover to almost pre-pandemic levels this year – but the International Energy Agency (IEA) warns this is nowhere near enough to put the world on track for net zero by 2050. The organisation has warned the gap between current investment trends and the required spending on climate mitigation is “a critical fault line in the clean energy transition“, stressing that significantly more investment needs to be directed into the clean energy sector, particularly in emerging markets and developing countries. The IEA predicts a 10% rebound will see total energy spending around the globe hit $1.9 trillion (£1.34tn) in 2021, with clean energy investments rising by around 7% over the same period to a height of $750 billion (£530bn). Although this sounds positive, the IEA says this level of financial commitment falls “far below” the expenditure needed to align the world’s energy systems to a truly clean future. It states clean energy spending will need to triple in the 2020s to get on track to deliver net zero by 2050 and enable temperature increases to be limited to 1.5°C. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA, said: “The rebound in energy investment is a welcome sign, and I’m encouraged to see more of it flowing towards renewables, but much greater resources have to be mobilised and directed to clean energy technologies to put the world on track to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. “Based on our new Net Zero Roadmap, clean energy investment will need to triple by 2030.” The report highlights that renewables are forecast to make up 70% of investment in new power generation capacity this year, with energy spending trends continuing to shift towards electricity markets. The IEA notes 2021 is likely to be the sixth consecutive year in which spending on the power sector exceeds that in traditional oil and gas supply, and acknowledges although upstream oil and gas investment is expected to rise by a tenth, spending will remain “well below”pre-crisis levels.
It suggests the proportion of capital spending directed into clean energy by the oil and gas industry could rise to 4% this year, up from 1% in 2020. However, this figure still needs to increase by a significant margin to reach sustainability goals. Dr Birol added: “As set out in detail in our recent Roadmap to Net Zero by 2050, governments need to go beyond making pledges to cut emissions and take concrete steps to accelerate investments in market-ready clean energy solutions and promote innovation in early-stage technologies. “Clear policy signals from governments would reduce the uncertainties associated with clean energy investments and provide investors with the long-term visibility they need. Our Roadmap shows there are huge opportunities for companies, investors, workers and entire economies on the path to net zero. Governments have the power to unlock these broad-based benefits.” The post IEA: ‘Recovery in clean energy spending not enough to reachnet zero’

Heathrow Airport jets off with renewable fuel Heathrow Airport jets off with renewable fuel Ahead of the G7 arrivals next week, Heathrow Airport has started using a renewable jet fuel that it claims could cut greenhouse gas emissions from flights by 80%. The fuel is produced entirely from renewable and sustainable waste and residue, such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste. The Finnish oil refining firm Neste produced the jet fuel while oil trader Vitol supplied it to the airport. Project partners say Heathrow is the UK’s first major airport to integrate such a fuel into its operations. Jonathan Wood, Vice President Europe, Renewable Aviation at Neste, said: “We are continuously supporting the aviation industry in its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “We are also proud to play a role in lower-emission travel to the G7 conference, where sustainability will be one of the key topics.” The post Heathrow Airport jets off with renewable fuel appeared first on Global Energy News.

Electrolysers drink beer for good! Electrolysers drink beer for good! You might have to reconsider before you bin that small amount of beer left in your fridge after the recent bank holiday. It could even make your car forget its thirst. An Australian startup named switcH2 has developed technology that converts wastewater, created from the brewing process, into hydrogen, which could even be used as fuel for vehicles. The company’s electrolyser uses organic-rich brewery wastewater paired with renewable energy to produce hydrogen. The system has proved more energy-efficient compared to conventional water-splitting electrolysers. The team behind the project says the technology can help breweries save costs on utility bills. German scheme extension to support CHP plants gets EU approval German scheme extension to support CHP plants gets EU approval The European Commission has approved the extension and modification of an existing German scheme to support electricity production from highly efficient combined heat and power (CHP) plants. Germany notified the Commission of its intention to prolong and modify an existing aid scheme to support new and modernised CHP facilities as well as the construction and expansion of energy efficient district heating/cooling networks as well as the construction and retrofitting of heating/cooling storage facilities. Under the existing scheme, operators of CHP installations will have to offer their electricity on the market and will receive support in the form of a fixed premium on top of the market price, except for very small installations, which will be eligible to receive feed-intariffs.
The annual budget to support CHP installations, storage facilities and district heating and cooling networks amounts to €1.8 billion(£1.54bn).
Under KWKG 2020, compared to the existing scheme, the threshold for operators to participate in a competitive bidding process to receive support was lowered from 1MW to 500kW of installed capacity and the number of operating hours eligible for support was reduced to further incentivise the developers to produce electricity in highly efficient cogeneration when it is needed most, i.e. at times of higher demand. According to the Commission, the scheme, which has been approved until 2026, will further promote energy efficiency, lead to a better integration of co-generated power into the German electricity market and lower CO2 emissions, without distorting competition. Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy said: “The German scheme will promote energy efficiency and contribute to further reductions in CO2 emissions, in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal. “Compared to the existing German scheme to support co-generated electricity, the new scheme introduces new features which will aim at further ensuring the competitiveness of the tenders through which the support will be granted, as well as keeping electricity prices low for consumers and incentivising cogeneration plants to operate at times of higher electricity demand, that is when it’s needed the most.” The post German scheme extension to support CHP plants gets EUapproval

Scottish renewable energy sector ‘supports more than 22k jobs’ Scottish renewable energy sector ‘supports more than 22k jobs’ The Scottish renewable sector supports 22,660 jobs, a new reportfinds.
The research from the University of Strathclyde’s Fraser of Allander Institute shows that onshore wind is the biggest renewables employer in Scotland, recording employment of 8,780 people. That is followed by offshore wind with 4,700 jobs and hydropower with3,290.
The figures also suggest the renewable energy technologies which produce the highest outputs are onshore wind with an estimated £2.4 billion, offshore wind with £889 million and hydropower with £915million.
These three technologies support an output of £772 million every year in other parts of the economy. Claire Mack, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, said: “The renewable energy industry is now recognised as a vital part of Scotland’s economy and is delivering the equivalent of almost all the country’s electricity consumption. “These new figures show not just the number of people employed by our members and others but also the reach of the industry into other parts of the economy.” The post Scottish renewable energy sector ‘supports more than 22kjobs’

Hydrogen’s a breeze in California Hydrogen’s a breeze in California Green hydrogen is about to boom in California as a waste to energy firm plans to make 11 tonnes a day. US energy company SGH2 Energy has signed a deal to supply 3,850 tonnes of green hydrogen a year to two of California’s largest owners and operators of hydrogen refueling stations. The startup plans to build a plant that will use recycled wastepaper and recycled water to produce green hydrogen. The project’s gasification technology will utilise biogenic waste and biomass to produce what the company calls ‘carbon-negative’hydrogen.
They claim the process reduces more carbon dioxide emissions than those generated while green hydrogen is produced using electrolysisfrom renewables.
SGH2 Chief Executive Officer Dr Robert Do said: “Working with clean energy leaders such as Mayor Parris and these large hydrogen distribution companies, we believe we will change the face of California transportation. “Affordable, mass-produced, reliable green hydrogen is the missing link needed to decarbonize the hardest to abate sectors liketransportation.”

Sun shines on ‘first’ floating solar power plant in Albania Sun shines on ‘first’ floating solar power plant in Albania The first unit of a floating solar power plant in Albania, claimed to be the first of its kind in the country, has started commercialoperations.
The project at the Banja reservoir, developed by Statkraft in co-operation with Ocean Sun, is now generating renewable electricity and injecting power into the Albanian national electricity grid. The first unit consists of 1,536 solar panels and has an installed capacity of 0.5MW, covering almost 4,000 square meters. In addition, 160 equal panels have been placed on land for comparison and documentation of the cooling effect on the floating panels. The implementation of the second phase is expected to be continue during the second half of 2021, whereby three additional floating units will be installed, with a total capacity of 1.5MW. Rigela Gegprifti, Statkraft’s Country Head in Albania said: “Today’s achievement marks an important milestone for Statkraft in Albania and a further step in our mission to lead the shift to renewable energy through innovative solutions. After the start of commercial operations of our Banja and Moglice hydropower plants, we are looking into further optimising these renewable assets. “The Banja Floating Solar Plant is a concrete example for further integration of different resources of renewable energy.” The post Sun shines on ‘first’ floating solar power plant inAlbania

In focus: ‘Energy transition, step up your game’ In focus: ‘Energy transition, step up your game’ The phrase energy transition is becoming a household name. The two words pop up in countless news articles, studies, and policies. There is a reason why we speak of energy transition instead of energy revolution as it is a process in which we gradually phase out fossil energy and replace it with renewable or low carbon energy. The word revolution implies a sudden shift with disruptive consequences. So, transition it is. But to reach a tipping point, more action is needed. That is why several voices from the industry say: ‘go big or go home’. “Fossil fuels cannot keep being cheaper than green fuels. Action is required now. It is vital to consider all greenhouse gases, not just CO2, on a full life cycle analysis, otherwise we will not be able to truly decarbonize shipping by 2050 in line with the Paris Agreement”, Søren Skou, CEO of A.P. Moller Maersk, said.Premium content
