WHAT WOULD YOU DO? TAKE AN IMMIGRANT’S JOURNEY. The first immigrants barred from entering the U.S. on the basis of race were Chinese laborers in the late 19th century. Li Wei’s choices reflect the ways in which these immigrants had to navigate policies specifically designed to keep them out or to make it as difficult as possible to attain the normal features of immigrant life: an income, a home, and a family. ENERGY JUSTICE IS THE NEXT CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE Energy justice is the next civil rights issue. Shalanda Baker thinks clean energy can help heal America's legacy of racism. That's why she's joined the Biden Administration. The air in Port Arthur, Texas, smelled like sulfur. It stung the nose of 7-year-old Shalanda Baker, a city girl spending a summer with her father in the Gulf Coast refinery FLOATING COWS AND MANURE ROBOTS: A DAIRY FARM ON THE SEA Floating Farm, the vision of engineer and entrepreneur Peter van Wingerden and his wife and business partner, Minke van Wingerden, is a 4,800 square-foot vessel that’s home to 35 dairy cows. It opened in May 2019 as an all-in-one floating cow farm that also houses the machinery to make milk and yogurt and a store for consumers. Teens are fighting back. By Glenn McDonald. Steve B., an auto industry executive in Michigan, has two teenage drivers in the house, with a third on the way — and he’s not taking chances. Steve, who doesn’t want his ONE BRAIN, TWO BIONIC ARMS One brain, two bionic arms. This man is learning to move two prosthetic arms directly, by thought alone. Inside a small hospital-room-turned-laboratory in Baltimore, a bald man sits in a wheelchair. Electrical wires lead from his head into a rack of computers, which are plugged into black prosthetic arms that seem to be moving on their own. ROBODOG CUDDLES AND THE FUTURE OF OUR PETS The Playdate Smart Ball, designed by a former engineer at AT&T Labs, is a spherical robotic rover that you can remote-control from work, via smartphone, when your pets are bored at home. The built-in camera and two-way audio provide a kind of slobber-proof FaceTime experience. The similarly themed iFetch is an automated ball launcher for dogs andtheir lazy humans.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A ZERO WASTER Seattle Zero Waste, a Meetup group about the lifestyle, had 12 members in 2017, and now has 1,613. The fascination is understandable; as Hanson and Su describe it, zero waste can lead to a magical life free of stress, clutter and psychological Skip to main content Northeastern Experience Magazine Logo* Humans+Robots
