Such gardens provide locally grown produce and build a sense of community. They are also great spaces for spending time outdoors and educating people about healthy eating. . We humans need access to fresh, local, sustainably-grown food, and access to open space for recreation to nourish our bodies and minds. Illinois ranks 49th among states for the percent of land remaining in native vegetation. Nine percent of people in the Chicago Metro region live in areas without close access to a grocery store. Green Teams are groups of 3 or more people from a House of Worship who provide cooperative leadership to educate, connect, and advocate for healthier communities. Green Teams meet regularly to connect your faith community’s spiritual practices and traditions solutions for climate change and other environmental justice issues. ADVOCATE FOR CLEAN WATER Even low levels of exposure can lead to learning disabilities, stunted growth, lower IQ, impaired hearing, and behavioral issues in children, and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as reproductive and kidney problems in adults. ABOUT US | FAITH IN PLACE Faith in Place empowers Illinois people of all faiths to be leaders in caring for the Earth, providing resources to educate, connect, and advocate for healthier communities. A GROUNDBREAKING GARDEN More than 40 giant fabric bins filled with soil are the home of a unique new garden at Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC) in Urbana. Crisp lettuce, kale, radishes, and beet greens are ready for harvest, and little pepper, bean, and tomato plants are starting to take off.
