Their working conditions are determined by collective agreements that the Finnish Forest Industries Federation negotiates with employee organisations. To reduce the volume of landfill waste more we need changes to legislation that restricts waste utilisation. FOREST CERTIFICATION PROMOTES RESPONSIBLE FORESTRY Forest certification promotes responsible forestry. 30/5/2017. The Finnish Forest Industries Federation supports the adoption of impartial and broadly recognised international certification systems. Forest certification can help safeguard the foundations of sustainable forest utilisation and supports international comparability. SUSTAINABILITY OF WOOD BIOMASS USED IN BIOENERGY Sustainability of wood biomass used in bioenergy production. At the end of 2016, the European Commission published the so-called “Winter Package,” which includes a proposal for a renewable energy directive. So that the production of bio-based energy would proceed in a sustainable manner, the Commission proposes the expansion of BUILDING ENERGY-EFFICIENCY REGULATIONS TO TIGHTEN IN THE Buildings and construction account for about 45% of Finland’s total energy consumption and produce some 35% of all carbon dioxide emissions. FOREST-BASED SECTOR INTRODUCES A VISION REACHING UP TO One year ago, the Finnish Forest Industries Federation launched a project that had the goal of defining a vision for the sector that extends up to the year 2025.The vision was crafted in cooperation with industry companies and stakeholders during 2014 and it was published today. The forest-based sector's vision crystallises in the pledge Evolving forest industry – prosperous bioeconomy. THE FINNISH FOREST INDUSTRY DEVELOPS THE FOREST SECTOR IN The Finnish forest industry has invested totally more than a billion euro in Russia, mostly in northwestern parts. Finnish companies have leased forests, harvesting operations, investments in infrastructure, mills and further processing in Russia. THE SUCCESS OF THE BIOECONOMY REQUIRES EXISTING INDUSTRY The bioeconomy is a central factor in sustainable growth. The forest industry’s vision of a future low-carbon society is based on the bioeconomy – on products that are made from renewable and recyclable natural resources using methods based on energy and resourceefficiency.
EMISSIONS TRADING DIRECTIVE AFFECTS THE FOREST INDUSTRY’S Efforts to reform the rules of EU emissions trading for 2021-2030 are currently underway. The emissions trading directive will be revised in 2015-2017. However, several rules and factors will be reviewed and updated after the directive is finalised. Emissions trading affects the forest industry’s competitiveness in many ways. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF THE EU LOOK LIKE FROM THE FOREST In Europe we are currently outlining the future outlook for the EU. The discussion includes formulating an understanding of what kind of EU will offer the best possible future for its citizens. This also lays the basis for the direction EU development will take. MONITORING AND FEEDBACK ENSURE THE HIGH QUALITY OF NATURAL In Finland, use and natural management of forests are monitored and supervised annually on all forest owners’ lands. This oversight has led to results. The quality of natural management has improved markedly with the aid of feedback and training in NEW RESEARCH PROJECT OFFERS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON The Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) are taking part in joint research into the impact of forestry practices on forest biodiversity. The research, on which a report will be issued at the end of 2018, will shed new light on how the nature management of commercial forests can bedeveloped.
