FRAIDYCAT
Fraidycat is a desktop app or browser extension for Firefox or Chrome. I use it to follow people (hundreds) on whatever platform they choose - Twitter, a blog, YouTube, even on a public TiddlyWiki.Hit Fraidycat's button and the main page comes up. There is no news feed.Rather than showing you a massive inbox of new posts to sort through, you see a list of recently active individuals. WHAT'S UP, FRAIDYCAT? Okay, going back to Robin’s efforts. The initial comment from that issue: I’d like to do a little investigating myself, and maybe even figure out what the issue with the newly-added feed is (I get the impression it didn’t quite “get added correctly”, whatever that might mean) but I don’t know where to look. THE FRAIDIEST CAT YOU'VE EVER KNOWN The first version of Fraidycat was a prototype - and it asked the question: “What would the Web looked like if we treated it like one big network again?”FRAIDYCAT 1.1.3
release Fraidycat 1.1.3 — Fat Cat Inbound. You ready for TikTok and those Strict Tracking fixes? Many thanks for your patience and for the dozens of you who chimed in with bugs and requests on Github.FEEDSPEEDERS
Pictured above: a tool called Arboretum by Joshua Hawxwell - a hosted ‘feedspeeder’. Not for reading feeds, but for quickly assessing what’s out there, much like Fraidycat does. Fraidycat 2 will offer some options for hosting like this - but Arboretum works today. (We won’t release Fraidycat’s hosted option until it is robust andsimple to use.
FRAIDYCAT 1.1.1
I feel gratitude in the depths of my very bosom today - and also in the folds of three of my knuckles - today for the good work of my beloved friends Eli Mellen, Joe Jenett and Emma Humphries. They reported some serious issues with the Firefox extension.CAT CONTAINER
community Cat Container. A tip from shambulatron on Hacker News, regarding keeping Fraidycat quarantined in its own ‘container’. ELECTRONIC DRAWERS, THAT’S ALL Originally, the plan was to have a tree-like dropdown of tags. But getting the aesthetic to work - well, it just didn’t. This new menu simplifies and unclutters the whole page.PATREON, RIPPED
Except that I also want to use this post to drop this link to FiveFilters’ Feed Creator, which lets you ‘program’ (in a sense) RSS feeds from pages like Patreon’s pages. Okay. Now that’s all.FRAIDYC.AT

release Fraidycat 1.1.4 — Just a Few Face Licks. Due to reports of broken public Facebook pages and a few tweet probs, here is a freshlybathed 'Cat for ya.
UNEXPECTED, USELESS, AND URGENT community Unexpected, Useless, and Urgent. An essay passed on by h0p3 covers the differences between online communication and tries to extract what is wonderful about RSS. This seems to vindicate Fraidycat’s strategy in distancing itself from the inbox mentality. COMPLIMENTS FROM TON ZIJLSTRA community Compliments from Ton Zijlstra. While I wrap up Fraidycat 1.1.3 — which solves the conflict with Firefox’s ‘Strict’ Tracking — here are some kind words from someone who inspired the organizational aspects of Fraidycat, Ton Zijlstra. COSPLAYING THE INTERNET My favorite recent essay that touches on Fraidycat is “The master tapes” by Robin Sloan: presents a lovely, anarchic opportunity: follow all the people you like, no matter what platform they’re using, without having accounts on those platforms.FRAIDYCAT 1.1.7
release Fraidycat 1.1.7 — SNIFFPPL.TXT. A new Fraidycat has gone out - dropping the new Quick Following feature, as well as support for plain text twtxt feeds. However, some issues have already arisen on Github, so expect another Fraidycat to go out in the coming days as1.2.
GLITCH IN THE PLAN
tease Glitch in the Plan. I have halted everything to work on a collaboration with @glitchyowl - a project that will be adjacent to Fraidycat - but which has caused me to postpone Fraidycat 2 temporarily. I will continue to fix problems that arise, of course.FRAIDYC.AT

I’m so sorry about that! Issue #210 is the place to talk about how to remove reliance on this website. Okay, going back to Robin’sefforts.

Two main goals with this one: To speed up the parser. I follow philosopher.life and it stalls the extension every few minutes while it downloads 30 megs worth of wiki.; To separate the scraper. I’ve already encountered issues with Twitter and Instagram changing things- and I
FEEDSPEEDERS
Pictured above: a tool called Arboretum by Joshua Hawxwell - a hosted ‘feedspeeder’. Not for reading feeds, but for quickly assessing what’s out there, much like Fraidycat does. So, yes, you can listen to podcast feeds and YouTube playlists directly from the panel. COMPLIMENTS FROM TON ZIJLSTRA community Compliments from Ton Zijlstra. It asks for permission to access all websites because it is fetching websites in the background (without using your credentials). Fraidycat doesn't communicate with a central server - unless your browser syncs Fraidycat's settings to a central server.FOLLOW SUPPORT
_Feeds_ (RSS, Atom or JSON Feed). This is how Fraidycat reads blogs, Tumblr, Medium, Mastodon, micro.blog, Wikipedia, Kickstarter or Stack Overflow. IF ONLY EVERY NETWORK USED RSS! _Twitter, Instagram, SoundCloud._ These sites don't support RSS, so Fraidycat does its best to pick things out of their web pages. _Pinboard, YouTube and Reddit._ These sites do offer RSS, but it's not advertised very well. So Fraidycat figures out where to find the RSSfeeds for you.
_Twitch._ Fraidycat now also shows when a follow is live. _TiddlyWiki._ Fraidycat reads the whole wiki and treats it like a giant RSS feed. Be aware that giant wikis may load down Fraidycat. -------------------------WHAT'S COMING NEXT?
I'd like to offer a personal search box for your follows. Perhaps even a keyword filter that will notify you when that keyword comes up in a follow. Mobile support. An iOS and Android app to sync using Firefox Sync. Let you use your credentials to follow private Facebook and Instagramaccounts.
The ability to reply and share by way of the extension. FRAIDYCAT is a desktop app or browser extension for Firefox or Chrome. I use it to follow people (_hundreds_) on whatever platform they choose - Twitter, a blog, YouTube, even on a public TiddlyWiki. Hit Fraidycat's button and the main page comes up. There is no _news feed_. Rather than showing you a massive inbox of new posts to sort through, you see a list of recently active individuals. No one can noisily take over this page, since every follow has a summary that takes up a mere two lines. ------------------------- You can certainly expand this 'line' to see a list of recent titles (or excerpts) from the individual - or click the name of the follow to read the individual on their network. And, if you are logged-in to your browser, Fraidycat will sync your follows between your different computers. -------------------------TAGS AND IMPORTANCE
Follows are arranged by tag (text - I like to use emoji) and the tabbed bar on Fraidycat's main page lets you select a tag to view. Follows also have an importance: real-time, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. These indicate how frequently Fraidycat should check that individual and moves follows off the main page if they aren't real-time, where you can view them periodically on your own.
