The technique mirrors part of the Fire Assay process used in the analysis (assay) of gold. You can get many different finishes with tumbling. For smoothing, use abrasive media in a vibratory tumbler. To burnish, run steel in a rotary tumbler. TUMBLING TECHNIQUE HINTS Tumbling Technique Hints. You can get many different finishes with tumbling. For smoothing, use abrasive media in a vibratory tumbler. To burnish, run steel in a rotary tumbler. Either tumbler needs to be large enough for your pieces to move freely. The action of either a rotary or a vibratory tumbler is inhibited with too much liquid. INSTALLING SIZING BEADS Make two marks on the shank at about 5 and 7 o’clock, to indicate where the balls will be soldered. Now firecoat the ring and use a pair of cross-locking solder tweezers to clamp one of the beads into place with the solder side against the ring. Add a drop of flux at the joint and heat the ring to warm it up. SANSONE STUDIO: ANCIENT ENAMELING TECHNIQUES The Sansones are artists in vitreous (glass) enamel, an ancient technique dating back to the sixth century B.C.E., where colored pulverized glass particles are applied to metal, then fired in a very hot kiln (1,500 degrees Fahrenheit). Each layer of color requires multiple firings. Artist 30 x 36 inch by Joel Sansone. NITRIC ACID SATURATED Hello Everyone, Question regarding the use of nitric acid (55% dilution). We are a small production shop that turns over around 50 pieces/day. We use a sulphuric acid pickle (10% dilution) followed by a nitric acid dip to remove the cuprous oxide that appears after soldering. Over time this nitric acid bath becomes a deep blue color due to it becoming saturated with said cuprous oxides. At* __
