This is the 17th annual edition of the Report Card, and it reflects a challenging year. Yet there is much to be optimistic about as we look ahead. . ANNOUNCING THE STATE OF LOCALIZATION SURVEY LILT, a Global by Design sponsor, is asking for those of us in the localization industry to give our thoughts on localization trends, best practices and our priorities for the future.. The survey takes about 10 minute to complete and qualified respondents will received a $5 gift card and be entered for a chance to win a $1,000 grand prize.. The survey runs until March 31, 2021. 1,000 LANGUAGES: THE WORLD’S MOST MULTILINGUAL WEBSITE The Jehovah’s Witnesses announced today that its website reached 1,000 languages, an impressive achievement. The release notes: On November 4, 2019, jw.org, the official website of Jehovah’s Witnesses, reached an unprecedented translation milestone—it now includes articles, videos, and audio content available in 1,000 languages, including 100 sign languages. A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE WEB GLOBALIZATION REPORT CARD I recorded a 5-minute overview of the Web Globalization Report Card, the methodology, and what the Internet looked like back when I beganin 2003.
CLUBHOUSE FAILS THE FLAG TEST I recently joined Clubhouse — thanks to Lee Vann and to Kathrin Bussmann for inviting me to participate in one of her weekly chats.. When I “onboarded” to the app I was struck by something I did not expect to see in this “born global” Silicon Valley creation. WHAT’S THE WORLD’S MOST MULTILINGUAL WEBSITE? (2018 UPDATE A few months ago, I wrote an essay for Multilingual in which I noted that the world’s most multilingual website isn’t Google or Facebook or even Wikipedia.. It is the website of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.. As I noted in the essay: The JW.org website supports more than 675 written languages. THE TOP 25 GLOBAL WEBSITES FROM THE 2015 WEB GLOBALIZATION UPDATE: The 2017 Web Globalization Report Card is now available.. I’m pleased to announce the publication of The 2015 Web Globalization Report Card.. Here are the top-scoring websites from the report: For regular readers of this blog, you’ll notice that Google is once again ranked number one.. The fact is, no other company on this list invests in web and software globalization like Google. AT&T: GOING GLOBAL AWKWARDLY AT&T, like most companies, needs to develop a “global gateway” strategy. A global gateway is an umbrella term for the visual and technical devices you employ to direct users to their locale- and language-specific Web sites. AT&T does use language-specific URLs, but fails to build in any global navigation scheme. MICROSOFT OUTLOOK NOW SUPPORTS 32 COUNTRY CODES Microsoft Outlook now supports 32 country codes. Speaking of country codes, I’ve been meaning to mention this. Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail) now offers users an impressive range of country code domains. Here’s the full list of supported country codes. It appears that Microsoft is using geolocation to enforce that you have to be based ina
