The final buzzer of the NCAA men’s basketball season may have sounded on April 5, but the action hasn’t ceased for Gonzaga. In the weeks following the national championship game, the Zags have seen a lot of people go, while getting other key pieces on board to help GU return as a national title contender again next season. A WALK THROUGH ON-CAMPUS HOUSING There are 19 buildings that freshmen, who will be signing up for housing next year on Feb. 27, can choose. Gonzaga also has three upper-division apartments, which students signed up for this week, with the exception of Kennedy Apartments, which had a special sign-up process earlier in the year. DIVERSITY MONOLOGUES FOCUSES ON EMPOWERING TRUTHS OF GU It’s a new year, which means another round of Zags sharing their stories that don’t always get told. Gonzaga will hold its 11th annual Diversity Monologues (DM) on HOME AWAY FROM HOME: GONZAGA FRESHMAN DORM REPUTATIONS AND For many freshmen, the social scene and location makes up for the old bathrooms and tiny rooms. Squeezed between Madonna Hall and Coughlin Hall and just across from Mulligan Field, CM offers a prime location for visiting other dorms and going to the COG. GONZAGA REMOVES EARLY ACTION FROM UNIVERSITY ENTRY This trend has changed in recent years. In 2018, there were over 8,000 first-year applicants, and 5,575 were early action. There were 3,836 admitted and 821 enrolled at GU — leaving a yield of 22%. LIKE IT OR NOT, DR. MELISSA CLICK’S HERE TO STAY AT Her record as a teacher and this incident go hand in hand. COMMENTARY: GONZAGA BASKETBALL PLAYERS DECLARE FOR THE NBA While his performance was not underwhelming, it may have been overshadowed by Petrusev’s breakout campaign. The sophomore led the Bulldogs in scoring and was in consideration for many prestigious awards by season’s end, including the Wooden Award for the nation's top collegiate basketball player. MAN UP, BUT NOT LIKE THAT: SEXISM IN SPORTS ON AND OFF THE The struggle for gender equality in sports has been an ongoing issue essentially since competitive sports have become mainstream. Many strides have been made over the years when it comes to women’s sports; however, many discrepancies can still be spotted between the treatment of male versus female athletes to this day. IN TEACHING, HAZEL 'FOLLOWED HIS BLISS One student who Hazel had a tremendous impact on is Colleen McMahon, an associate professor of communication arts at Gonzaga. McMahon's father had worked with Hazel and so, at the beginning of her freshman year, McMahon went into Hazel's office with Hazel's business card in hand as proof of the relationship her father had with him. KIND, CARING, SELFLESS: REMEMBERING GONZAGA STUDENT SIENNA Sienna Rettig lived her life with the mindset of a shark. Always moving forward and never dwelling on the past. Described by her friends as their angel, Sienna was the light in a lot of peoples’lives.
REMEMBERING CHADWICK BOSEMAN: ACTOR, ACTIVIST, KING Boseman began his career in acting after he graduated from Howard University, a historically Black college in the year 2000. He returned in 2018 to deliver the commencement address and discussed how in his early career, he was fired from a role because he questioned the producers and directors about the inclusion and active use ofstereotypes.
GU GLEE CLUB: GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN The men like to compare it with a basketball team winning the Final Four. Though the formal end of the Glee Club came in 1958, the singing has continued through many reunions and special gatherings and the men have developed a unique camaraderie that has resulted in a special and generous gift to the university.GONZAGABULLETIN.COM
