Even as our scientific observation has shown the cosmos does not revolve around us, our ongoing investigations continue to keep us Centered in the Universe. METEORS | GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY Meteor showers occur annually or at regular intervals as the Earth passes through the trail of dusty debris left by a comet. Meteor showers are usually named after a star or constellation that is close to where the meteors appear in the sky. Griffith Observatory has hosted school visits since shortly after the building opened in 1935. The current program serves 27,000 fifth-grade students a year and weaves together the Observatory's telescope, exhibit, and building content, as well as programs in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium and Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon theater, to bring classroom learning to life. THE COSMIC CONNECTION Unimaginably vast and continuously changing, the universe has been growing larger for nearly 14 billion years. We are connected to the origin of the universe by the sparkling ribbon of time that reaches from the Big Bang to today, when we observe what the universe is, understand what it is doing, and appreciate how long all of this hasbeen going on.

The gently swaying Foucault Pendulum in the W.M. Keck Foundation Central Rotunda has long been a visitor favorite since the building opened in 1935. One of the largest such devices in the world, the fully restored pendulum is actually an elegant scientific instrument which demonstrates the Earth's rotation. REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE MONUMENT Although hundreds of films, television shows, and commercials have used the picturesque surroundings of Griffith Observatory, none have featured the building more prominently or brought as much international attention as the Warner Brothers production of Rebel Without a Cause in 1955.
