ADDRESSING NATIVE AMERICAN HOMELESSNESS WITH CULTURALLY Unfortunately, that vision of safe, stable and affordable housing isn’t the reality for everyone in our community. Since 2015, homelessness in Minnesota has increased 10 percent, and on any given night, more than 7,000 people are experiencing homelessness. More than half of these individuals are children or young adults who may be couch hopping between family and friends, staying in sheltersMIKE AUGUSTYNIAK

United Way’s 211 Resource Helpline provides accurate, up-to-the-minute information and referrals to more than 40,000+ statewide resources in 100+ languages. United Way 211 addresses approximately 52 urgent needs every hour and provides approximately 460,000 referrals per year. On any given night in thegreater Twin

Housing. Homelessness grew nine percent in the Twin Cities metro area over the last three years, even amidst record employment. On any given night in the Twin Cities, around 6,700 people experience homelessness, with Indigenous people and LGBTQ youth most disproportionately affected. 27 percent of all Twin Cities households are cost-burdened SUICIDE PREVENTION CALL SPECIALIST Perform suicide risk assessment and crisis counseling for Greater Twin Cities United Way Suicide Prevention Hotline callers. The economic impact of COVID-19 has made the housing crisis in the Twin Cities region more severe. During the most frigid months of winter, many of our neighbors urgently need emergency shelter, help paying bills and the kindness of people who care. Yet, navigating services is complex, leaving many feeling hopeless.The need for changeis now.

In partnership with Greater Twin Cities United Way’s 211 resource helpline, the state of Minnesota recently launched RentHelpMN, a new rental assistance program making it possible for low and moderate-income renters to get caught up on overdue rent andutilities.

Every dollar you donate to the 211 Hope Starts Here Fund provides housing guidance and resources through Greater Twin Cities United Way’s 211 resource helpline . Nearly 60% of all calls to the 211 resource helpline are related to housing — specialists listen and offer guidance on topics ranging from emergency shelter to rent, mortgage and utilities assistance. Social workers and nonprofits also use the information to help the people they serve, and United Way shares 211 data with government officials to inform supportive housing policies. What is the 211 resource helpline? Greater Twin Cities United Way’s 211 resource helpline – available 24/7 and in 100+ languages – is staffed by certified community resource specialists who are trained to provide referrals to resources and services, including housing, food, childcare, education and employment. 211 specialists leverage 40,000+ statewide resources, address 52 urgent needs every hour and provide approximately 460,000 referrals per year.*
Why did United Way create the 211 Hope Starts Here Fund? Greater Twin Cities United Way created the fund to support people with urgent housing needs: * COVID-19 has exacerbated the housing crisis in the Twin Cities region due to job loss and economic uncertainty. * CARES Act funding to cover late rent/mortgage bills has ended and access to housing resources continues to be the number one need for individuals and families with low incomes. * Nearly 60% of all calls to the 211 resource helpline are relatedto housing.
* On any given night in the greater Twin Cities, 6,700 people experience homelessness.*
