MILDEW IN A COFFEE MAKER’S RESERVOIR Grab a flashlight, a q-tip, and some diluted bleach, but remember to use cool water. Just for fun, revisit How to use chlorine bleach safely. Use that flashlight to shine inside the reservoir and use the cotton swab to clean out those obnoxious ridges where little spores may be hanging out. Then fill the reservoir with the dilute bleach. HOW TO CLEAN VELVETEEN If you have stains or dirt to remove from the velveteen, take it to a professional dry cleaner. In a pinch, you can spot clean a velveteen article with a solvent cleaner like what you would find in the Dryel or Woolite home dry cleaning kits, but be very careful. Spot test the solvent first and follow the manufacturer’s directions to theletter.
HOW TO REMOVE SOAP RESIDUE FROM PLASTIC Dear Home-Ec 101, Help! My plastic dishes are starting to taste (and smell) like soap. I hand wash, and switched to a "moisturizing" dishsoap this spring.
HOW MUCH VINEGAR SHOULD I USE IN THE LAUNDRY? If your washing machine has gaskets or tubing that is vulnerable to a mild acid, it should have a warning. (When we’re discussing white vinegar, we are referring to the 5% dilution. Never use the concentrated 25% in the laundry) Next, I wish your question about the amount of vinegar to add to your washer were as simple to answer ashow to add it.
WHAT ARE THESE TINY BUGS ON MY WINDOW SILL? Booklice tend to hang out in windows as well as in the books that give them their name. Since they feed on molds, reducing the humidity that encourages mold growth is the simplest way to control these tiny, harmless pests. When you wiped the window sills with dilute bleach, you probably killed their food source. HOW TO REMOVE MUSTY ODOR FROM JEANS October 15, 2008 at 6:32 pm. Add 1/2 cup of Arm & Hammer (generic is fine!) to the wash with the laundry soap, and wash at the highest temp the jeans will take. I’ve gotten an amazing array of difficult nasty smells out of fabric this way. Cooking grease smells from a fast-food job, cat urine, etc etc gets all of it out. HOW TO REMOVE ODORS FROM STONEWARE Fill your sink with hot water and vinegar. Next allow your dishes to soak briefly, scrub well, rinse thoroughly, and dry immediately. If the food odors remain, try wetting the dishes and briefly scrubbing with Bar Keepers Friend, then rinsing thoroughly. If you have stoneware, it is important to never allow the dishes to soak for long. PILLOWCASES AND OILY SKIN Option 4: Hide it. To not be gross, this tactic assumes the sheets are cleaned regularly, just stained. Make the bed and put decorative pillowcases with a sham on top of the stained pillow. Out of sight, out of mind. Each option has its drawbacks. Maybe you don’t want to Q-TIPS FOR TOUCH UP PAINTING Touch ups work best on flat paint and are most noticeable on glossy finishes. If your walls have eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, 0r glossy finishes, it is best to touch up your paint by repainting the entire section of the wall so the difference in shade is less noticeable. With this in mind, it would not be worth using a Q-Tip to repaint agouge
BUBBLES ON A SMOOTH TOP RANGE Heather says: First of all, you do not seem like an idiot. HOW TO CARE FOR ACRYLIC FLOORING Then you’ll need to strip the old finish -and you absolutely must consult the manufacturer’s guidelines before doing this or you could easily cause permanent damage or void a warranty. Yuck. Then apply an acrylic floor polish -again with going by your manufacturer’s recommendations- carefully following the directions. OVEN-BAKED TUNA CAKES (CROQUETTES IF YOU’RE FANCY) Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a shallow dish, place 1/4 cup of the bread crumbs and set aside. In a medium bowl whisk together the egg, dijon mustard, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Stir in the onion and then the tuna, finally fold in the remaining bread crumbs and just mix until barely combined. ARE APPLIANCE BULBS SAFE FOR OVENS? Signed, Burnt-Out in Berkeley. Heather says: Yes, appliance bulbs are simply the standard size for most appliances. Glass has a ridiculously high melting point and the tungsten filament burns hot. An oven designed for residential use, even with the self-cleaning setting, is not going to come anywhere close to the design threshold of the light. HOW TO CARE FOR FLEECE TO PREVENT AND REDUCE PILLING AND All those tiny, tiny synthetic fibers are also what make fleece a bear to care for. Heat and friction are your enemies. Both heat and friction will change the feel of fleece by melting or matting those tiny fibers. Wash your fleece in cold water on the delicate or WHY WON’T MY DRIED BEANS SOFTEN? As dried beans age, the pores through which the water enters tend to close, and the outer coating may change, too. If water can’t get into the bean, it won’t soften no matter how long you cook them. Unfortunately, in your particular case, you added the acidic ingredient early in the process, and the acid has already reacted withyour beans.
