Chemu Ng'ok (b.1989) lives and works in Nairobi, Kenya. She completed her Master's degree in Fine Art (Painting) at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, in 2017 and was the recipient of the Mellon Foundation's Visual and Performing Arts of Africa Masters Bursary in 2016. NOMI 2020. NOMI – like you don’t know me – is the nickname the artist gave to her shadow-self, an unwavering source of power, creativity and resilience. Through NOMI, the artist contends with the stains of past experience. From each brain-like form, vibrant images burst forth – snakes, predatory animals, awesome deities, and joyous women, dancing or in prayer. PHUMELELE TSHABALALA Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is delighted to present Becoming water from the same source, the first solo exhibition of South African artist Phumelele Tshabalala.The exhibition comprises a new body of mixed media works on canvas, board and paper. Chemu Ng'ok (b.1989) lives and works in Nairobi, Kenya. She completed her Master's degree in Fine Art (Painting) at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, in 2017 and was the recipient of the Mellon Foundation's Visual and Performing Arts of Africa Masters Bursary in 2016. She was selected to show five paintings at the Fourth New Museum Triennial JETSAM POETRY: THE SCULPTURE OF BILL WOODROW 1972-90 Between 1972 and 1990, Bill Woodrow produced some of the most intriguing and enigmatic sculptures of his generation. In 1972, at the remarkably early age of 23, the artist was given his first solo show by the Whitechapel Gallery, London, where The Evening Standard critic Richard Cork singled out his work for its ‘substantial presence’.
