Regional human rights bodies monitor, promote and protect human rights in several geographic regions around the world. In Africa, the Americas, and Europe, the regional human rights systems play a significant role in protecting human rights among their Member States, including by deciding States’ responsibility for violations alleged in complaints submitted by individuals. The Inter-American System is composed of two principal entities: the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights AFRICAN RIGHTS COURT ISSUES LANDMARK ADVISORY OPINION On December 4, 2020, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) published and delivered an advisory opinion declaring national laws that criminalize vagrancy to be incompatible with human rights standards. The opinion concludes that laws that essentially criminalize homelessness, poverty, or unemployment are overly broad and allow for abuse. CITIZENSHIP & NATIONALITY Nationality can be acquired in one of three ways: by birth on a State’s territory ( jus soli ), by descent from a State’s national ( jus sanguinis ), or by naturalization. The citizenship laws of each State dictate whether the State applies jus soli or jus sanguinis and explain the requirements for naturalization. In Africa, the Americas, and Europe, the regional human rights systems play a significant role in protecting human rights among their Member States, including by deciding States’ responsibility for violations alleged in complaints submitted by individuals. The Inter-American System is composed of two principal entities: the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL LAW OVERVIEW. International criminal law, though not quite as comprehensively codified or as widely ratified by States as international human rights obligations, is relevant to the study and protection of international human rights because it, generally, is aimed at punishing acts which affect fundamental human rights, namely: life, liberty, and security.
