APPLE ANNOUNCES IPADOS 15: FIRST LOOK AT THE NEW FEATURES Apple took the wraps off iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 during their annual developer conference today and showed off many of the new features that will be coming to Apple devices later this year. Here's a quick overview of what's new in the iPad version of the software and how pilots might be able to use some of these features in the cockpit. PREVENT IPAD OVERHEATING ISSUES IN THE AIRPLANE THIS Based on iPad Pilot News reader surveys over the years, the majority of pilots have had the iPad shut down on them at least once in flight due to overheating. This is by far the most common problem reported by pilots when flying with an iPad, but it can be prevented with a IPAD APPS FOR TURBINE PILOTS Aircraft Performance Calculator & Flight Manual Apps. THE TOP 20 APPS FOR PILOTS There are thousands of apps that are useful for pilots, from flight training and weather briefings to calculators and games. With that in mind, compiling a list of the top apps may seem foolish, but once again we're going to try—after all, a brand new iPad pilot needs to start somewhere. This list isn't necessarily our 20 favorite apps, but rather the ones we see in use most often. HOW DO DIFFERENT IPAD MODELS FIT IN AN AIRPLANE? Let’s consider seven different size devices in the same Cessna 172 cockpit to see what fits best. We mounted the iPads and iPhone in two ways: with a suction cup and with a yoke mount. We were able to mount nearly every device to the yoke with the exception of the 12.9” iPadPro 3rd Gen.
HOW DO I MOUNT MY IPAD IN THE AIRPLANE? Securing your iPad while you fly is important for safety (to prevent your tablet from flying around the cockpit), but also for convenience (to keep it close by and easy to use). There are plenty of different mounts to choose from, but they aren't all universal. Which one is right for you? It depends a lot on the type of airplane you fly. Let's look at some examples. THE BEST FLIGHT SIMULATOR APPS FOR IPAD (IF YOU'RE A PILOT Mention “flight simulator” right now and most pilots will think of the new Microsoft Flight Simulator, which has been one of the hot topics in aviation since it was released last year. This is an impressive new option, and when paired to high quality flight controls, it’s a valuable resource for keeping current at home (but don’t try to learn crosswind landings on it). SHOULD PILOTS BUY AN IPAD WITH BUILT-IN GPS? On the other side of the equation, many pilots these days are flying with an ADS-B receiver, like a Sentry or Garmin GDL 50 for datalink weather and traffic, and these devices also include a GPS to show your location on the iPad’s moving maps. When you factor in that your iPhone or Android phone also include a GPS (in addition to the GPS in the panel), many pilots find that it’s not worth HOW TO MAXIMIZE IPAD BATTERY LIFE One of the most under-appreciated features of the iPad is its fantastic battery life. Even with a high-resolution screen and a powerful processor, Apple’s tablet offers a battery life of 4 to 6 (or more) hours in the air—better than almost every other competingtablet.
