The third SteepleChase release by Brian Charette’s freakishly swinging organ sextet—and his 19th release overall—takes unusual turns, leading the listener down paths adorned with so many forks that you’ll be sated, if at times confused, by BROADCASTER AND RECORD EXECUTIVE EULIS CATHEY DIES AT 67 His career in jazz radio spanned more than four decades. Eulis Cathey, a record executive and radio broadcaster who was known for his long stints both at WBGO radio in New Jersey and at SiriusXM satellite radio, died April 27 at his home in Buffalo, N.Y., after a shortillness. He was 67.
RALPH PETERSON JR. 1962–2021 Ralph Peterson Jr. was born May 20, 1962 in Pleasantville, New Jersey to Ralph Sr., a police officer who would become Pleasantville’s first African-American chief of police (and eventually its first African-American mayor), and Shirley Peterson. Ralph Sr. also played drums, as did his father and four of Ralph Jr.’s uncles. CHUCK LOEB, GUITARIST AND COMPOSER, DIES AT 61 Chuck Loeb, a versatile guitarist, composer and producer best known for his associations with Stan Getz and Steps Ahead, and a musician whose compositions have been recorded by a variety of smooth-jazz and pop acts, died at 9 p.m. on July 31, according to his family.
