EUROPE ON A BUDGET OF UNDER $50 A DAY: IT IS POSSIBLE! It was the perfect first trip to Europe for us and it was definitely affordable. We averaged around $45 USD (€40) each per day (not counting the 2 weeks in Morocco), which is less than the $50 we had planned for. Visiting Europe on a budget is easily doable (as long as you follow my tips), so don’t let its expensive reputation put youoff.

Hardcore Christians are probably going to have to perform a self-exorcism after viewing the graphic images in this post. The temples in Khajuraho are adorned with carvings depicting people, for want of a better word, shagging. 10 AWESOME ISLANDS NEAR BALI THAT YOU CAN EASILY VISITBALI BEST PLACES TO VISITISLANDS OF BALIISLANDS OF BALI Lombok. Lombok, a large island to the east of Bali, has a lot going for it. The Quiet American (2002) Brendon Fraser and Michael Caine are involved in a gentlemanly love triangle with a Vietnamese woman in Saigon. Set in the 1950s, a complicated time with the impending fall of French colonial rule and growing American influence in Vietnam. It’s a decent movie and is a definite change of pace from the moreaction
YUBENG, CHINA: MORE OF A PARADISE THAN SHANGRI-LA! Yubeng, China: More of a Paradise than Shangri-La! There’s a tiny Tibetan village in Northern Yunnan that might just be the most stunning place in Asia. Snow covered peaks surround lush green valleys filled with birds, butterflies, flowers and prayer flags. This village isn’t Shangri-La, instead that name (in 2001) went to a dusty, traffic
BACKPACKING IN INDONESIA: COSTS, TIPS AND PLACES TO SEE Jogjakarta. Possibly the most interesting big city in Indonesia, Jogjakarta is an ideal place to base yourself for excursions in central Java. The town itself has a nice little backpacker area – the back alleys filled with guesthouses, cafes and restaurants provide a nice respite from the chaotic streets. JAVA ITINERARY: A WEEK EXPLORING THE TEMPLES AND VOLCANOES Borobudur and Prambanan. Visiting these two temple complexes was the main reason for my visit to Java. Borobudur is a huge Buddhist structure built in the 8 th and 9 th centuries. Unlike most ancient ruins in Southeast Asia it’s just one big building, but that one building is pretty impressive. It lacks the scope of some other sites in the region, but unless you’ve been to the likes of THE ULTIMATE TWO WEEK THAILAND ITINERARY: BANGKOK, BEACHES Getting from Lopburi to Koh Kood is a bit of a hassle — this will definitely be the hardest travel day in this two weeks in Thailand itinerary. It seems like the best way to do it is to head back to Bangkok and then catch a bus to Laem Sok Pier (close to Trat). You can book a bus / ferry ticket from an agent in the Khao San Road area orcatch
THE 15 BEST NATURAL WONDERS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA 10: Si Phan Don (4000 Islands), Laos. I was surprised to find out that landlocked Laos has islands, 4000 of them apparently! One of my most memorable experiences in Southeast Asia was staying on Don Det for a week. I had a great view of the Mekong River from my $3 riverside bungalow and was treated to some of the best sunsets in the region. PISAC: THE OTHER MUST-SEE INCA RUINS IN THE SACRED VALLEY There is a hill above this group of buildings but we opted to continue downhill towards town. We could see another little stone village further down the hill — these ruins (and all the others at the site) are surrounded by great scenery, which makes Pisac the 2nd most photogenic Inca site in the Sacred Valley (after Machu Picchu ofcourse!).
BACKPACKING IN YUNNAN, CHINA: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW Dorms cost anywhere between ¥30-60 ($5-10 USD), with single rooms usually priced between ¥60-150 ($10-25 USD). Keep reading for more specific information on accommodation in Yunnan. Buses and trains are pretty expensive. A typical 4 hour bus ride costs around ¥65($10USD).
THE GILI ISLANDS, INDONESIA: WHICH IS THE BEST GILI ISLAND Gili Trawangan (generally referred to as Gili T) Gili T is the largest of the three main Gili Islands (I say main Gili Islands because there are some other ones off Lombok, which I won’t be discussing here). It also has the largest personality. Gili T is known as the “Party Island” and has traditionally attracted young travellers in THE BEST PLACES TO SEE MONKEYS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA Sacred Monkey Forest: Ubud, Bali – My favourite place to see monkeys in Southeast Asia. I like a good monkey-based tourist attraction, so it was with some excitement that I ventured into the Scared Monkey Forest in Ubud. Even the persistent drizzle couldn’t dampen my spirits and before long I was seeing them all over the place. THE NIGHT BUS FROM ECUADOR TO PERU: CUENCA TO MANCORA Booking a ticket in Cuenca. Make your way to “Terminal Terestre” in Cuenca to book your ticket. We went early in the morning and bought our tickets for the 10pm bus from Cuenca to Mancora. It costs $15 each (it might be a bit more to Piura). It was pretty CHRISTCHURCH TO PICTON VIA KAIKOURA: DRIVING THE COASTAL Blog, New Zealand, Oceania. Just over a year ago a huge earthquake, cantered near Kaikoura, decimated parts of the coastal highway between Christchurch and Picton. It’s not the cheapest option and apparently the seas can get rough, but it’s the most common way to get there. IS HAW PAR VILLA THE WEIRDEST TOURIST ATTRACTION IN THE WORLD? I knew I was probably witnessing the weirdest tourist attraction in Asia, and possibly the world, but things were about to get weirder. The first thing I saw upon leaving the Ten Courts of Hell was a model of a woman breastfeeding an older woman, who I’m assuming is her mother, while a little kid does sit-ups and another stands aroundpeeling an orange.
