HOW TO FLY A KITE
You need wind to fly a kite. The right day is a day when the wind is blowing, but not too hard and not too light. Ideal flying conditions are when the wind is blowing from 8 to 15 miles per hour; some light wind kites can fly in winds of 3-4 miles per hour, and there are now kites that fly indoors with no wind other than the “apparent wind” that you can generate just by walking. Kite fabric is the fabric that you use to build a kite. You can use almost any fabric to build a kite. Many fabrics have been used: bed sheets, blue tarps, tree leaves, plywood, raincoats, suit lining, that webbing in those old woven lawn chairs, various plastics and papers, potato chip bags, pizza boxes. Again, almost any fabric can be used. AMERICAN KITEFLIERS ASSOCIATION 1 PREFACE Kites in the Classroom is designed to help you promote the world of kiting to an audience in a classroom setting. This is intentional. The fabric is intended to be used with the warp lined up with the highest loads in the sail. This is important to keep in mind when choosing the cloth orientation in a kite. Wind Window. Particularly evident with maneuverable kites (dual-line, quad-line, fighter, or power kites), the wind window is an important aspect of kite flying – the angle of wind on your kite changes as you fly around the wind window, decreasing or increasing the power and control depending on a number of other factors such as the weight ofyour kite or lines.

Flying kites is an uplifting event! Kites can be a hobby, sport, art, science project, or social event – sometimes all at the same time. Kites are fun to fly and beautiful to watch. Kite flying is a great activity for children of all ages. There is a real sense of freedom transcending borders when you fly. Flying kites crosses cultures, generations, age groups, social groups, and nations. KITE FLYING IS A WONDERFUL AND PEACEFUL PASTIME. KITING IS FOR EVERYONE — WHETHER YOU’RE A CHILD WHO JUST BUILT YOUR FIRST KITE OUT OF NEWSPAPER AND TWIGS OR A COMPETITIVE SPORT KITE FLIER WHO SPENDS EVERY AVAILABLE MINUTE PRACTICING YOUR CRAFT. WE ALL SHARE THE SAME LOVE OF KITE FLYING.COMMUNITY
