ABOUT KMSKA
The KMSKA is the only Flemish museum with high-level scientific status. Not only are we responsible for conserving, managing and expanding our collection, we also carry out scholarly research into the works, the techniques used, colour, visual language and more SITE PHOTOS TO GET YOU DREAMING Site. photos. to. get. you. dreaming. Just before construction halted for the summer break, we dispatched our site photographer Karin Borghouts for one more look at how the work is coming on. The beautiful pictures she brought back have got us all dreaming about the new museum. Like you, we’ll have to be patient for a while longerthough.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH DUKE OF ALVA’S FORTRESS The fortress itself occupied the whole of what is now the Antwerp South district, from the River Scheldt to the Leien and from Marnixplaats to the Bolivarplaats. It was constructed in 1567 on the order of King Philip II of Spain and the Duke of Alva. A bulwark connected the citadel to the Spanish ramparts. ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE Meet our artists in residence. Up-and-coming young talent and established names with immense drive and just the right amount of Wanderlust: in the years ahead, they will take their inspiration from the KMSKA’s collection and its role as a museum. The result will be productions of their own: new stories in words, sound, silence andmovement.
THE RESTORER: THIS SISTER’S STORY In the first series of The Restorer, we follow twin sisters Ellen and Jill, who are working together to conserve Jacques Jordaens’ painting Cupid and Psyche. FIVE SPECIAL RUBENS RESTORATIONS Several exceptional works by Peter Paul Rubens are among those restored in recent years. They illustrate the diversity of the KMSKA’s collection and Rubens’ mastery of several different disciplines. 1. Holy Family with the Parrot. A moment’s rest, Mary is thinking as she tenderly ruffles Jesus’ hair.ZAAL Z | KMSKA

The Intrigue is one of the finest masquerades in James Ensor’s entire oeuvre. Masks customarily hide the true face of their wearers. In Ensor, they function in precisely the opposite way. From 1880 onwards, the ‘peintre des masques’ used these disguises to reveal the inner malice of his characters in scenes that are bizarre andgrotesque.
PETER PAUL RUBENS: LIFE AND WORK He was born in the German town of Siegen on 28 June 1577 to parents who had to flee Antwerp because of political and religious problems. After his father’s death, the family returned. At the age of 12, Rubens was studying the Latin classics, but had to break off his education due to a lack of money.
He was employed as a page boy to aduchess
