There has been a noticeable increase across the State in the number of children ages 19 and under who are getting infected with COVID. Wrangell hasn’t held a king salmon derby since 2017. But this year, the borough’s Chamber of Commerce is bringing back the historic competition for its 66th running. “I’ve heard that a lot of people are excited about it,” says MILITARY BRANCHES GEAR UP FOR NORTHERN EDGE 2021 Thousands of troops and the latest in American military hardware will soon descend on Alaska for war games between branches of the armed forces. “Northern Edge” is a biennial, large-scale exercise held in May. MEDICAL EXAMINER CONFIRMS DEATH OF PORT PROTECTION'S GARY Gary Muehlberger (Courtesy Mickey Ramos) The State Medical Examiner confirmed Thursday that Port Protection resident Gary Muehlberger died in the fire that consumed his home earlier this month. MILITARY BRANCHES GEAR UP FOR NORTHERN EDGE 2021 Thousands of troops and the latest in American military hardware will soon descend on Alaska for war games between branches of the armed forces. “Northern Edge” is a biennial, large-scale exercise held in May. MEDICAL EXAMINER CONFIRMS DEATH OF PORT PROTECTION'S GARY Gary Muehlberger (Courtesy Mickey Ramos) The State Medical Examiner confirmed Thursday that Port Protection resident Gary Muehlberger died in the fire that consumed his home earlier this month. State trooper dispatch adds that the 75-year-old’s next of kin have been notified. AFTER OUTAGES, COAST GUARD SLOWLY REPAIRS VHF TOWERS After outages, Coast Guard slowly repairs VHF towers. U.S. Coast Guard towers that relay distress signals over VHF marine radios are slowly coming back online. Last year, the Coast Guard alerted mariners of the outages saying it could not reliably monitor Channel 16, a decades-old distress frequency. The outages have been an issue for months. WRANGELL ADMINISTRATION SEEKS STATE, FEDERAL RECOGNITION Wrangell’s administration continues to push for recognition of its economic disaster declaration at the state and federal level. Wrangell declared two disasters in late August. The first, a fishing disaster due to abysmal salmon returns, which is a declaration that will be considered by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, before beingpassed on
