SHERIFF DUNN DISCUSSES SUMMER SAFETY; COUNCIL SUPPORTS SPRING CREEK II; TWO NEW VACCINE CLINICSJune 4, 2021
By Rich Larson, News Director Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn As the end of the pandemic coincides with the beginning of summer, more and more people are coming out of their homes, taking their masks off, and are eagerly enjoying the warm weather and the public events that have begun to come back into our lives. Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn said he saw it himself over the Memorial Day Weekend. Campgrounds were full. Lakes were bustling with boats and personal watercraft. People were fishing from docks. The roads were full. To many it certainly feels like life is returning to normal. But, said Sheriff Dunn, that doesn’t mean people should act recklessly. Safety should always be a top concern. At the top of the list, he said, people should get vaccinated. Vaccines and vaccination clinics are readily available, and the higher the number of people who receive the vaccine, the safer the community becomes. When boating, he reminded everyone to always wear a life jacket or a personal floatation device. Sheriff Dunn pointed to the incident on Saturday night when a man drowned in Crystal Lake, just south of Burnsville, and said strange things can happen on the water, and people need to be prepared forthat. To schedule an appointment, call 612-262-6675. METRONET SEEKS CABLE FRANCHISE; HRA OFFERING HOMEOWNER ASSISTANCE; HOME TOWN CREDIT UNION GRAND OPENINGJune 3, 2021
By Rich Larson, News Director Tuesday night at the City Council meeting, MetroNet, the company that purchased Jaguar Communications last year, began the process of formally applying for a cable franchise in the City of Northfield. While the city will be more than happy to provide Northfield residents with another choice for a cable provider, it is the internet service that seems to have piqued their collective interest. MetroNet offers FTTP, or fiber to the premises, meaning, theoretically, all of Northfield’s residential areas would have access to high-speed internet. Tuesday night was the first step in approving the franchise. Before the city can negotiate terms with MetroNet, the council first had to evaluate the company’s qualifications and pass a resolution saying that MetroNet is indeed capable of running a cable franchise. A presentation was made by attorney Brian T. Grogan from the Law Firm of Moss & Barnett, with whom the city has contracted to evaluate MetroNet and guide the city through the process. Grogan said that MetroNet is a fully competent provider of cable and broadband services, with operating franchises in more than 100 communities in 8 states across the country. June 2, 2021
By Rich Larson, News Director The Northfield City Council met last night in the Council Chambers in City Hall for the first time since March of 2020. After the initial excitement of having everybody in the same room, they took up a wide and varied agenda, including the consideration of assistance to the Community Action Center’s Hillcrest Village project. This is something the city has been both supportive of and excited about, because it will supply emergency housing to those experiencing homelessness in Northfield, will redevelop city land, and is being built with some of the most up-to-date climate friendly materials and techniques. Last month, CAC Executive Director Scott Wopata contacted the city asking for aid in six specific areas. The city staff estimates the total amount for the aid requested would come to approximately $203,000. This would be in addition to the forgivable loan in the amount of $250,000 the project has received from the city Housing Redevelopment Authority. All members of the council, along with Mayor Rhonda Pownell seemed eager to help, but there were many questions about which city funds would be available to help the various requests, and would such help even be legal. After Councilor Peterson-White made a point about aid given to the Northfield Family YMCA to build their facility that was deemed to be a charitable donation, City Attorney Christopher Hood made the point that Northfield has a unique provision in its Charter that allows the city to make a contribution of this type, so long as it does not benefit a private individual or corporation, adding that it is the only municipal charter he has ever seen that allows such athing.
