LABYRINTH LAYOUT
For an indoor labyrinth I would recommend a path width of at least 1 foot (30 cm) for solitary walking or 2 feet (60 cm) for more comfortable walking, running or group activity - this gives a labyrinth that will fit in an area of 15 feet (4.5 m) or 30 feet (9.0 m) in width. For outdoor locations, a minimum path width of 1½ feet(45 cm) is

The popularity of the Theseus and the Minotaur myth, and the attendant labyrinth symbol, were well known throughout the Roman Empire, in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. It occurs at this time in many forms and various designs, but was especially popular as a decorative element in floor mosaics. Since it was first produced in 1980, Caerdroia has published a multitude of papers, articles and notes on many aspects of mazes and labyrinths - their history and distribution, usage and development as well as theoretical matters and news items.FIRST LABYRINTHS
Other examples, found on objects recovered in archaeological excavations, can sometimes be securely dated, but despite these problems, we know that the earliest labyrinths to be found in Europe are possibly around 4000 years old. Below are a selection of images of these 'early' labyrinths, with approximate dates of creation, whereknown.
NORDIC CHURCHES
Scandinavian Church Labyrinths. Labyrinths in churches are found throughout Scandinavia. A few are simple graffiti, but the majority were painted as wall or ceiling frescos, directly onto fresh plaster. Unlike the pavement labyrinths to the south, with only one exception at Grinstad in Sweden, they are all of the old 'classical' design, or INDIA, ASIA & AFRICA Specialised Sources & Academic Studies - Labyrinths in India, Asia & Southern Africa. The labyrinth, both as a symbol and a story, has a long history in India, indeed, recent discoveries suggest much longer than generally supposed.
