At the intersection of Park and Main Streets (traffic light) turn right onto Route 73 (South Main Street) and follow for 1.8 miles. Turn left onto North Shore Drive and follow signs 3.4 miles to Owls Head Light State Park. Once in the parking lot, walk the two-tenths of a mile to the lighthouse. LONG POINT LIGHTHOUSE The Cape Cod Chapter – a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation is dedicated to restoring the historic lighthouse. The first Long Point Lighthouse was constructed in 1826 and consisted of a lantern atop a keeper’s dwelling. The beacon exhibited a fixed white light from a focal plane of 35 feet that was visible 13 nauticalmiles.

Built in 1944, this gray, octagonal-shaped, concrete structure owned by the University of Connecticut was once slated for demolition. The American Lighthouse Foundation’s stewardship responsibility for a segment of our nation’s lighthouse heritage continues to grow. To date, ALF and its dedicated chapters serve as the “keepers” for the following lighthouseslisted alphabetically. TOUR OWLS HEAD LIGHTHOUSE Directions: From US Route 1in Rockland. At the intersection of Park and Main Streets (traffic light) turn right onto Route 73 (South Main Street) and follow for 1.8 miles. Turn left onto North Shore Drive and follow signs 3.4 miles to Owls Head Light State Park. Once in the parking lot, walk the two-tenths of a mile to the lighthouse. PERKINS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE The Friends of Perkins Island Lighthouse – a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, is dedicated to restoring the historic lighthouse. Perkins Island Light Station grew over a period of a couple of years following the erection of the wooden light tower in 1898. A boathouse and pyramidal fog bell tower were constructed fourslater in 1902.

TOUR ROCKLAND BREAKWATER LIGHTHOUSE Walk to Sea Take a walk out to sea without getting your feet wet! The Friends of Rockland Harbor Lighthouses open this landmark lighthouse as volunteers are available. The lighthouse sits at the end of a 7/8-mile long breakwater and features an attached keeper’s house. POMHAM ROCKS LIGHTHOUSE Pomham Rocks Lighthouse was constructed in 1871 and consisted of a wooden eight-room dwelling with a light tower attached to the front of the building’s roof. The Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses (FPHL), a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation, was able to contract with the J.B. Leslie Company to carry out important maintenance at the offshore Whaleback Light, Kittery, Maine,in September 2020.
