This week’s Digital Docent video highlights Daniel Huntington’s historical portrait of Abigail Dolbeare Hinman. This painting is a well-known and well-loved piece in the Lyman Allyn’s collection. It depicts Hinman’s reaction to the attack on the city of New London by Benedict Arnold and the redcoat soldiers. DREAMCATCHER DRAWING Using a pencil, draw 6-8 circles within each other decreasing in size. Draw a pattern or design within each circle. Make sure to repeat the pattern/design all the way around the circle. You will begin to see new shapes! Draw some wavy lines to represent string tying the dreamcatcher and feathers together. PLAYTHINGS OF THE PAST This exhibit features, toys, dolls, and other kinds of material culture of childhood from the Lyman Allyn’s permanent collection. The core collection grew out of a substantial gift in the 1960s from toy collector Lydia Baratz, who had assembled an impressive collection over a period of forty years.
