(July 23, 2019) PAUL STARR, MAKE-UP ARTIST TO THE STARS, DEAD AT 51 Make-up artist Paul Starr, whose celebrity clientele included Hollywood actresses, rock stars, supermodels and fashion houses, has died. According to the Los Angeles County Department of the Coroner, he was 51. According to Ed Winter, the assistant chief of ‘PLANET OF THE APES’ CELEBRATES 50 YEARS! Ben’s son, Dana Nye, returned home from college in spring 1967 and went to work for Dan Striepeke, who became Ben’s successor and was a key artist and supervisor on Planet of the Apes. “I worked for six weeks on the film—from June 15 to end of July of 1967,” said Dana Nye. “I started working prep on the background apes. DOROTHY PEARL, JOURNEYMAN MAKE-UP ARTIST 1950 Dorothy Pearl, one of the first women to join Local 706 as a make-up artist, who helped blaze the trail for others to follow in her footsteps, has passed away. At a time when our local was going through tremendous changes, Dottie was working in Texas on the iconic horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. After numerous attempts to join as a OPTIC NERVE CO-FOUNDER JOHN VULICH DEAD AT 55 John Vulich, veteran make-up effects artist and co-founder of Optic Nerve Studios, died in his sleep on Oct. 12 at age 55. A three-time Emmy winner for Babylon 5, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The X-Files, Vulich’s numerous credits include the Night of the Living Dead remake, The Dark Half and the never-released version of Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four.
