Established in 1954, The Mammal Society is a charity advocating science-led mammal conservation, leading efforts to collect and share information on mammals, encourage research to learn more about their ecology and distribution, and contribute meaningfully to efforts toconserve them.

Cut off from the continent around 8,000 years ago, as the ice retreated and re-opened the North Sea and English Channel, our native mammal fauna was fixed. Crinkly, often studded with shiny fragments from their insect diet. Blue-black colour. Sweet smelling with a hint of linseed oil. Size varies, 1.5-5 cm long and 0.8-1 cm thick. European rabbit. Found in grassland, field edges and hedgerows. SPECIES – HARVEST MOUSE – THE MAMMAL SOCIETY The harvest mouse is the only British mammal to build nests of woven grass well above ground. Nests tend to be found in dense vegetation such as grasses, rushes, cereals, grassy hedgerows, ditches and brambles. They are generally located on the stalk zone of grasses, at least 30cm above ground in short grasses and up to a metre in tallreeds.
