As the water flows through these food systems it gains nutrients and ends up being a critical component to the biological health of the estuary. OUR ROOTS — MA‘O ORGANIC FARMS Moʻokuʻauhau - Our Roots. In 2000 a group of community members founded the Waiʻanae Community Re-Development Corporation (WCRC) to grow two of the community’s greatest assets: the rich food producing traditions of the region and youth who were not achieving their academic potential. WCRC created a social enterprise called MAʻO Organic Farms (MAʻO) and began developing programming to HIGH SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES high school opportunities. MAʻO high school programming aims to develop a college-going culture among Waiʻanae, Ewa and Waialua moku high school students, and to provide entree to a financially viable, culturally-rooted, and skills-enriching college-to-career pathway. The Farm 2 Fork (F2F) program provides an exciting opportunity for students, teachers, parents, and youth-focused community groups to enjoy a hands-on and minds-on experience at MAʻO Organic Farms. ʻAUWAI — MA‘O ORGANIC FARMS MA‘O Educational ‘Auwai. An ʻauwai is literally on open channel of water that connects a river to a taro patch or fishpond. As the water flows through these food systems it gains nutrients and ends up being a critical component to the biological health of the estuary. MAʻO operates one of the largest certified organic farms in Hawaiʻi, where we grow over 40 different varieties of fruits and vegetables. The farm enterprise is co-managed by youth interns and apprentices, who shoulder the hana nui of feeding community while receiving training and mentorship to become entrepreneurial community leaders. OUR ROOTS
In 2000 a group of community members founded the WAIʻANAE COMMUNITY RE-DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (WCRC) to grow two of the community’s greatest assets: the rich food producing traditions of the region and youth who were not achieving their academic potential.
