INVASIVE MARINE SPECIES Invasive species are a serious problem around the world. Many are introduced to an area where natural population controls are absent.CORAL INDEX
There are about 70 species of stony or reef-building corals recorded at normal diving depths in Hawai'i to date. It can be difficult to identify some species with certainty, especially underwater, without examining the skeletal structure of the calices (cups inhabited byindividual polyps).
SILKYPIX 3+ TUTORIAL, INTRODUCTION Silkypix 3+ Tutorial, Introduction. Silkypix is a full-featured program for converting RAW digital camera data into standard TIF or JPEG image files. Beginning with version 3 corrections became possible on TIF and JPG's. Other small changes have been added to versions 4,Pro & 5.
THREATS TO THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT Threats to the Marine Environment. Many cultures have treated bodies of water as convenient repositories for trash, "bottomless" sources of food and natural resources, or something to be dredged, filled, or drained when deemed necessary. Although we know better in these environmentally-aware times, misuse continues around the world, whileareas
CAULIFLOWER CORALS, FAMILY POCILLOPORIDAE Family Pocilloporidae. Cauliflower, Lace, & Antler Corals. These coral have rough, solid skeletons pitted by tiny calices. They inhabit areas exposed to surf, surge, or current. Colony shape varies considerably according to physical factors and can be difficult to identify in somesituations.
FAMILY FUNGIIDAE, RAZOR CORALS Free-living species generally consisting of a large single polyp. Reproduces sexually or asexually, by budding from the remains of an old polyp and fission. FAMILY ACANTHURIDAE, SURGEONFISHES, PAGE 1 An important group associated with coral reefs, surgeonfishes are named for the sharp, sometimes venomous blade-like caudal spines aheadof the tail.
PLANTS BROUGHT TO HAWAII BY POLYNESIAN SETTLERS Large tree with light green leaves found in mesic valleys. Brought to Hawaii by early Polynesian settlers. Roasted nutmeat eaten sparingly, used for
HAWAIIAN HOGFISH, BODIANUS ALBOTAENIATUS A robust wrasse seen on reefs at scuba depths. Females are fairly common but males are rare, and tiny juveniles are seen during springand early summer.

AIRCRAFT - MARINELIFEPHOTOGRAPHY.COM Gulfstream G-I of Phoenix Air based in Cartersville, GA. This aircraft was the primary mode of transportation for residents and tourists from Honolulu or Lihue to Midway in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, until mid-1999 when replaced by chartered Aloha Airlines B737-200's. FAMILY APOGONIDAE, CARDINALFISHES Cardinalfishes are small nocturnal carnivores with two dorsal fins, large eyes and mouths. Males incubate a cluster of eggs in their mouth at least until they hatch.MIDWAY WRECKS
F4U CORSAIR AIRPLANE WRECK 116 feet Advanced. Inverted fuselage and wings of a U.S. Navy fighter that collided in mid-air during a training mission in 1943. It rests upon a sandy bottom 200 feet west of a mooring and underwater telephone cable, making this an advanced dive with limited bottom time. AGARICIID CORALS, FAMILY AGARICIIDAE These corals are quite variable in appearance and difficult to identify at times. They have small star-shaped calices with fine radiating ribs known PLANTS BROUGHT TO HAWAII BY POLYNESIAN SETTLERS Large tree with light green leaves found in mesic valleys. SNAPPERS, FAMILY LUTJANIDAE A large family of carnivorous reef fishes with a large mouth and a gill cover without spines. Rovers are deepwater snappers with specialized jaw bones allowing the mouth to extend far forward. ENDANGERED HAWAIIAN PLANTS Approximately 1000 species of flowering plants are native to the Hawaiian Islands, 89% of which are endemic to the region. Many of Hawaii's endemic plants have been driven to extinction due to a number of human-induced forces including deforestation, urbanization, agriculture, ranching, over-harvesting, alien species, and disease. EMPERORS & PORGIES, FAMILY LETHRINIDAE & SPARIDAE Emperors are snapper-like fishes with large mouths and a flat spine on the gill cover. They feed upon fish and invertebrates. The group is well-represented in warm seas where they are popular food fishes but only one species occurs in Hawai'i. New: Visual Fish Family KeyFishes

------------------------- -------------------------INTRODUCTION
Aloha and thank you for visiting. I love scuba diving, fish watching, underwater photography, plants & flowers, and sharing discoveries of God's creation with you. My goal as marine educator and photographer is to promote awareness, appreciation, conservation, and respect for our world and its inhabitants. We must all take an active role in preserving the earth's resources for tomorrow.USING THIS SITE
Access each group with the icons below the banner above. Groups are further divided by family, phylum, or logical unit. Each unit page lists species by geographic region starting with Hawaii as default. Each region's most common species are shown first along with similar ones for comparison. Individual species pages may be accessed by clicking the image below its scientific name (yellow italic). COMMON & SCIENTIFIC NAMES Common names are important but of limited usefulness as they can be created, modified, and changed by anyone. It is not unusual for a common name to be used for entirely different species in different parts of the world or for a single species to have a multitude of common names. Effort has been made to choose a US English common name (bold white) prevalent in Hawaii or the host country along with a local name if appropriate. In the case where no such common name exists, I have taken the liberty of creating one based on descriptive characteristics or a translation of the scientific name. In order to reduce confusion it is necessary to refer to each species using itsscientific name.
The scientific name is generally accepted worldwide by professionals of any nation. In general the accepted scientific name is the oldest known recorded description of a given species found in scientific literature. Many of the names are based on Latin or Greek. It is important to note that ongoing research often results in changes to currently 'accepted' scientific names. Examples include the discovery of an older description, the reassignment of one species as a variety of another (lumping, with the stricken name becoming a synonym), splitting of a single species into two or more distinct species (splitting), or the promotion or demotion of a genus or subgenus. Name changes can lead to confusion as print references age and name changes take place. Certain researchers have a propensity to split or lump species to excess only making the situation worse. This situation is particularly bad among seashells and herein I have chosen to keep things simple by refraining from promoting subgenera to full generic status. UPDATES & CONTRIBUTIONS Updates are made regularly as our collection continues to grow. You may contribute images & species of interest to expand our library. If deemed relevant, your photos will be cropped to 300 pixels wide (high if vertical) to best illustrate the subject. Your name will be watermarked at the bottom. These images will not be sold or released to a third party, however please remember that everything on this site is public domain, on display free-of-charge, and copying without permission is an assumed risk. These photos are too small to yield an acceptable print and I discard your original submissions once the web image is complete.DISCLAIMER
