She grew up in Proseč near Skuteč in the Chrudim district where her mother's family came from. When Milena was three years old her mother died and her father remarried. Because of that he had to emigrate to the U.S. where Maria’s parents got married in 1958. They returned to Cuba immediately after the victory of the Cuban Revolution. Her father got a job in the management of a company operating production and processing of sugar cane. SILVESTER KRČMÉRY (1924 Silvester Krčméry was born on August 5, 1924 in Trnava. He spent his childhood and youth in Banská Bystrica. Later on his family moved to Bratislava because of his father´s work. He joined the Catholic Scout League and during his high school studies he fully participated in various Church activities. In 1943 he met with a priest, Professor Tomislav Kolakovič (1906-1992) who intensively TOMÁŠ RADIL (1930) Prof. MUDr. Tomáš Radil, DrSc. was born on 8 November 1930 into a Jewish family in Bratislava. José Azel was born in 1948 in Havana. His mother died when he was 10 years old. His father was a lawyer. He had two older brothers with whom he lived in the United States after leaving Cuba at a very young age. José was strongly influenced by the teachers at the Catholic school he attended. As a result, at the age of 12, he joined the resistance against the recently established government of JARMILA ONDRÁŠKOVÁ (1944) Jarmila Ondrášková was born on 8 June 1944 in Prlov in Moravian Wallachia to the family of Antonín and Anna Ondrášek. Both her parents joined the anti-Nazi resistance at the end of the war. When special Nazi taskforce Joseph encircled Prlov on 23 April 1944, twenty-three death sentences were passed after cruel interrogations. Antonín Ondrášek and other two partisans were tortured and VLASTIMILA HOLAKOVSKÁ (1941) Vlastimila Holakovská, née Hrdoušková, was born in April 1941 in Leskovice in the Vysočina region. At the end of the war in May 1945, her village was burned down by the Nazis. It was one of the greatest tragedies at the very end of the war, when the Nazis murdered 25 people on May 5 and 6, including seven women. In addition, they burned down a number of houses. Father František worked his way up to the head of the furniture store, and his mother Helena became the head of the bread and pastry shop. His father (born in 1919) experienced the rage of The Second World War, firsthand. As a soldier of the hungarian army, he took part in the fighting in the front line by the russian MARIE ŠUPÍKOVÁ (1932 Marie Šupíková was born on 22 August, 1932, in Lidice. Her father, Josef Doležal, worked in the Kladno steel works, her mother, Alžběta Doležalová (née Káclová), worked in the neighbour's household. Her parents had two children, her and her older brother Josef. After the attack on Lidice on 9 June, 1942, the whole family was arrested at their house. In 1945 she began studying a graphics school and already in 1947 was admitted to the Academy of Arts ANTON PIŽURNÝ (1961) Anton Pižurný was born March 17, 1961, in Želiezovce. The troops of the Warsaw Pact were just entering Czechoslovakia when the Pižurný family were coming back from holiday. The father, as a member of the Communist Party, found it very hard when the occupation started. Anton graduated grammar school in Banská Štiavnica. He studied librarianship, worked in bookshops and focused on his PAVEL CHMELÍK (1942) Pavel Chmelík was born on April 24th 1942 in Dvůr Králové nad Labem. His father was an Austrian born in Vienna who came to Czechoslovakia in 1933 and later became a citizen of Czechoslovakia. Pavel´s mother, who came from a 'partly-Jewish' family, did a blue-collar job at a textile factory. He spent his childhood and youth in Banská Bystrica. Later on his family moved to Bratislava because of his father´s work. He joined the Catholic Scout League and during his high school studies he fully participated in various Church activities. In 1943 he met with a priest, Professor Tomislav Kolakovič (1906-1992) who intensively MARÍA C. WERLAU (1959) Maria Werlau was born August 15, 1959 in Havana. Her father fought against the regime of general Fulgencio Batista. Because of that he had to emigrate to the U.S. where Maria’s parents got married in 1958. They returned to Cuba immediately after the victory of the Cuban Revolution. Her father got a job in the management of a company operating production and processing of sugar cane.EVA ADORIAN (1926)
Eva Adorian, née Ehrlichová, was born in Prague in 1926 in a well-to-do Jewish family. She had an older sister. Eva was a member of the Jewish movement El Al and she was active in the association Shared Hand, which was helping Jews to cope with critical situations during transports. In 1942 the family had to board a transport for the ghettoin Terezín.
TOMÁŠ RADIL (1930) Prof. MUDr. Tomáš Radil, DrSc. was born on 8 November 1930 into a Jewish family in Bratislava. He grew up in the town of Parkan (at present named Štúrovo) in southern Slovakia. His family knew both Slovak and Hungarian. His grandfather, a butcher, served as head of the Jewish community in Parkan while his father worked as a manager of nobility's farm estate.JAN JELÍNEK (1912
Jan Jelínek was born on May 19, 1912, in the Polish town of Zelov, in a family of descendants of Czech evangelical exiles. He was raised in the Protestant faith and led to Czech patriotism. As a boy, he was already working on accounting in the form of some scattered workshops at the Jan Sláma firm, which was involved in the textile industry. VĚRA FISCHEROVÁ (1916) Věra Fischerová was born December 24, 1916 in Vienna. Her father Karel Pražák was an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army and he was teaching at the military academy during the First World War. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia the family moved to Prague where her father continued in his military career. More than 20 years after its fall the physical monuments are slowly disappearing from the landscape. Partner organizations from Germany (Johannes Gutenber University IVAN PASTERNÁK (1944) Ivan was born on July 2, 1944 in times when Bratislava was repeatedly bombed. His father and his siblings died in concentration camp in Dachau. During the war, Ivan and his mom were hiding in Havel's family. After the war he studied in Prešov and when he successfully graduated, he continued in his studies of geography and biology in Prague. Ivan Kalina was born on November 10, 1942 in Pilsen. His father Václav Kalina had a company with dental technology, his mother stayed in the household where two of Ivan's step-brothers lived with them. In 1945, a witness experienced the bombing of Pilsen and overflights of Allied air unions. After liberation, he met American soldiers, for whom his older brother worked as an interpreter.JOSEF LAMBOR (1933)
Josef Lambor was born on March 3, 1933 in Kaňovice. The family owned a farm in the village with eight hectares of fields and two hectares of forest. At the end of World War II, on April 14, 1945, twelve-year-old Josef witnessed how the Partisans shot a German soldier on guard in the village. The mayor and his family were threatened with execution for this, and the Germans allegedly alsotoyed
MIROSLAV HLAVÁČ (1928 Miroslav Hlaváč was born on January 4, 1928 in Prague's Žižkov district. He was a radio publicist, author of short stories, feuilletons and reports. In 1946 he graduated from a real grammar school in Prague. In June 1948, at the time of XI. All-Sokol Rally, he and his friend Slávek tried to emigrate. They managed to cross the border in Šumava unnoticed and headed for the Italian border IRIS RUIZ HERNÁNDEZ (1980) Iris Ruiz Hernández was born on August 11, 1980, into a family started by two people with a total of five children from their previous marriages. She grew up in the well-known city district of El Alamar, located in the east of the capital Havana. This significantly affected her childhood. Although she describes it as a happy one, she remembers very well the shortcoming that people living on BERTA FIŠAROVÁ (1941) Berta Fišarová, b. Plevová, was born on September 7, 1941 in Velká Losenice near Žďár nad Sázavou. She was the firstborn child of the peasants Josef and Pavlína Plev, who owned rather a larger farm. In the 1950s, the family resisted the pressure to join the unified agricultural cooperative (collective farm), which was established in Velká Losenice in 1952. STANISLAV PEROUTKA (1933 Stanislav Peroutka was born on September 21, 1933 in Krumvíř, district of Břeclav. The parents were petty farmers and made a living by working on a state farm. Immediately after the war,at the age of twelve, Stanislav began studying at the Jesuit Pontifical Institute in Velehrad. Here he became member of the Scout unit, led by FatherJaníček.
