BACH PIANO CONCERTOS The four-keyboard Concerto in A minor (BWV 1065) pays direct homage to the Italian master by transcribing one of Vivaldi’s Op. 3 set of 12 string concertos (known as L’estro armonico and published in 1711 — the source for several transcriptions Bach made for harpsichord and organ). For BWV 1065, Bach transcribed Vivaldi’s Concerto in B COMPOSER PORTRAITS: CHEN YI Composed in 1988. Composed in July-August 1988, after Chen Yi’s second year of studies at Columbia, this is one of the first pieces she produced in the United States. It catches her music at a point of ignition, following the deeper familiarity with contemporary western music she was able to acquire here in New York. THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC In common with many other great works of art, when Carl Theodor Dreyer’s La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc was first released its qualities weren’t immediately recognised. It opened in Copenhagen in April 1928, though it wasn’t until October in that same year that it received its second premiere in Paris, but only after changes insisted upon by the French church were made. UNSUK CHIN | PROGRAM NOTES | MILLER THEATRE AT COLUMBIA Gradus ad infinitum (1989) This is one of seven pieces Chin produced during a year (1988-9) she spent working at the electronic music studio of the Technical University in Berlin. She went back there in the mid-1990s to create a couple more pieces, and since then has been an occasional visitor to IRCAM, always using electronic resources to JOE MARTIN | BIOS | MILLER THEATRE AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY Joe Martin is one of the most sought-after bassists on the New York City jazz scene. Known for his warm sound, facile ear, harmonic flexibility, and lyrical solos, he has performed with a diverse range of musicians.
