2019 MILWAUKEE RIVER BASIN REPORT CARD Whether you are a seasoned water advocate or just getting your feet wet, we would like to welcome you to the 10th Annual Milwaukee River Basin Report Card. This report summarizes water quality data collected in 2019 and dives deeper into some of the challenges and successes happening throughout the Milwaukee River Basin. MILWAUKEE BRIDGE HISTORY The bridge was replaced with a modern bascule bridge in 2000. State Street: There have been two bridges crossing the Milwaukee River at State Street. The first was an iron swing bridge built in 1871. The second was a bascule bridge constructed in 1924 that was recentlyrehabilitated.

Waukesha is now in the process of implementing their diversion plan, which includes construction of drinking water pipelines from Milwaukee and sanitary pipes to return treated wastewater back to Lake Michigan via the Root River. CONNECT - MILWAUKEE RIVERKEEPER Volunteer. Volunteers are the lifeblood of Milwaukee Riverkeeper. The Milwaukee River Basin is over 800 square miles and we rely on dedicated volunteers to help us work towards swimmable, fishablerivers!

The organization was originally formed in 1995 as Friends of the Menomonee River and our first campaign was a citizen-led effort to protect the County Grounds from development. MILWAUKEE BRIDGE HISTORY The bridge was replaced with a modern bascule bridge in 2000. State Street: There have been two bridges crossing the Milwaukee River at State Street. The first was an iron swing bridge built in 1871. The second was a bascule bridge constructed in 1924 that was recentlyrehabilitated.
POLLUTANTS & CONTAMINANTS The Clean Water Act defines “pollution” as the “man-made or man-induced alteration of the chemical, physical, biological, or radiological integrity of water.”. More general pollution includes any alteration in the character or quality of the environment, or any of its components, that renders it harmful or less suited for certainuses.
SPRING CLEANUP REGISTRATION Trash Class. Class III: These locations have a ton of trash and need lots of help! You will be busy all morning! Class II: These locations typically have plenty of trash, but not as much as a Class III location. You may have a more moderate intensity cleanup. Class I: These locations still need your care and attention, but the workload may be lighter and less intense. ROAD SALT - MILWAUKEE RIVERKEEPER Road Salt is a threat to our waterways. Chloride, the key element in road salts, poses a threat to the health of our rivers and environment. When water runs over the landscape, it picks up pollutants along the way, including excess road salt and other deicingchemicals.

Lilith grew up in California where fly-fishing with her dad gave her a life-long appreciation for rivers. Since moving to Milwaukee in 2000, Lilith has been actively involved in Milwaukee’s non-profit community in many capacities – staff, board and volunteer. MILWAUKEE BRIDGE OVERVIEW BRIDGE OPERATOR HOUSES. A movable bridge requires an operator to raise the bridge for barges, ships, and other tall vessels, such as sailboats. Bridge operators are not only responsible for communicating and ensuring safe passage (see MKE’s bridge operations procedures), but also for maintaining the complex mechanisms of a bascule or liftbridge.
