Hidden LA, a really great blog that you should probably be checking out anyway, just offered a driving and walking tour of the L.A. River that was a great success – completely selling out in a matter of hours.. The event was so successful, in fact, that they’re offering two more tours. Today marks the third anniversary of Modern Hiker, spun off of a now-defunct personal blog in the latter days of 2006. December 10th was the day the mho.dev domain launched, with some stories about a Yosemite exhibit at the Autry Center and a proposed trash dump near Joshua Tree (that’s STILL being fought, unbelievably), and FIRES IN THE ANGELES While we were all enjoying the rare-treat thunderstorms yesterday, a few errant lighting strikes did spark some backcountry fires in the Angeles National Forest. As of now, there are 16 small fires burning, 12 of which are fully contained. It appears the most stubborn blaze is located near Twin Peaks, which is just next to YOSEMITE ROADS CLOSED FOR WINTER Just an FYI for anyone who was thinking of heading up to Yosemite soon – both Glacier Point Road and Tioga Road have been closed for the winter this week, meaning you will no longer be able to enter the park from the Eastern Sierras or access the northern half of the park on Tioga Road, or drive to the South Rim on Glacier Point Road.. NEW LAND ACQUISITION IN THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS The nation’s largest urban-adjacent National Recreation Area just got a little bit bigger. Today, the National Park Service announced it had purchased 160 acres of land in Los Angeles County to add it to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, bringing the total amount of parkland in the mountain range to 79,491 acres.MODERNHIKER.COM

Today marks the third anniversary of Modern Hiker, spun off of a now-defunct personal blog in the latter days of 2006. December 10th was the day the mho.dev domain launched, with some stories about a Yosemite exhibit at the Autry Center and a proposed trash dump near Joshua Tree (that’s STILL being fought, unbelievably), and FIRES IN THE ANGELES While we were all enjoying the rare-treat thunderstorms yesterday, a few errant lighting strikes did spark some backcountry fires in the Angeles National Forest. As of now, there are 16 small fires burning, 12 of which are fully contained. It appears the most stubborn blaze is located near Twin Peaks, which is just next to YOSEMITE ROADS CLOSED FOR WINTER Just an FYI for anyone who was thinking of heading up to Yosemite soon – both Glacier Point Road and Tioga Road have been closed for the winter this week, meaning you will no longer be able to enter the park from the Eastern Sierras or access the northern half of the park on Tioga Road, or drive to the South Rim on Glacier Point Road.. The park itself is open year round, and the remaining NEW LAND ACQUISITION IN THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS The nation’s largest urban-adjacent National Recreation Area just got a little bit bigger. Today, the National Park Service announced it had purchased 160 acres of land in Los Angeles County to add it to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, bringing the total amount of parkland in the mountain range to 79,491 acres.MODERNHIKER.COM
