In 1989, on a business trip to Russia, Mr. Lankton purchased his first icon at an open-air market. His collection quickly grew, and eventually gave birth to the idea of starting a museum. Mr. Lankton chose Clinton for the location to give back to the community that had supported him. The Museum is housed in a 150-year-old former millbuilding.

In 1989, on a business trip to Russia, Mr. Lankton purchased his first icon at an open-air market. His collection quickly grew, and eventually gave birth to the idea of starting a museum. Mr. Lankton chose Clinton for the location to give back to the community that had supported him. The Museum is housed in a 150-year-old former millbuilding.
ICON WITH THE ANNUNCIATION Icon with the Annunciation Ionian Islands, 17th century 30.3cm; W 24.8cm Given by Ella Wentworth Dyne Steel in 1998. Reg. no. BEP 1998,1105.2 (Cormack 61) The icon is painted in egg tempera with gold leaf on wood primed with gesso over cloth. A painted red inscription in majuscule Greek identifies the scene: Ο ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙCΜΟC (The Annunciation). The archangel Gabriel is to ICON WITH ST DEMETRIOS Icon with St Demetrios Syria, 17th century H. 51.6cm; W. 40.8cm Bequeathed by Guy Holford Dixon in 1994. Reg. no. BEP 1994,0102.4 (Cormack 22) The icon is painted in egg tempera with gold leaf on a wood panel primed with gesso over cloth. The back is unpainted and has two horizontal battens. This relatively large icon depicts St Demetrios on horseback BRITISH MUSEUM CATALOGUE INTRODUCTION Well represented in the collections of the British Museum is the art of the empire centered on Constantinople between 330 and 1453. This society, which saw itself as the continuation of the Roman Empire in the eastern regions of the Mediterranean, was established in this city by the Emperor Constantine the Great (324–337) who re-dedicated the previous city of Byzantium in his own name, the MUSEUM SHOP & TEA ROOM MUSEUM SHOP. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE MUSEUM OF RUSSIAN ICONS IS DEEPLY SADDENED TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF FOUNDER GORDON B. LANKTON. An astute collector and skilled businessman, Gordon will, above all, be remembered as a leader who treated everyone with dignity. He led with humility and genuinely cared for his employees and the community, which earned him the loyalty that brought the success he deserved. His example of a life well-lived serves as an inspiration to many. To continue his legacy, the Museum has created the Gordon B. Lankton Collections Fund. It will stand as an enduring testament to his love of art, his Museum, and his community and ensure that his vision will continue to be shared by visitors from all walks of life and all over the world.
