OS PHOTOMAPS
OS Photomaps. In the late 1940's a series of photomaps of selected areas of the UK were published by the Ordnance Survey. Created from Royal Air Force aerial photography, they were intended to substitute for large-scale mapping, which was in short supply following the Second World War. They were needed for vital planning andreconstruction work

The Simmons Aerofilms Collection contains aerial photography taken by several important British air survey companies over a period of 50 years. This material was brought together over a period of several decades during the acquisition or merger of successive companies. I n 1997, Simmons Mapping (UK) Limited, established in 1965 to provide CAMOUFLAGE, CONCEALMENT AND DECEPTION Camouflage, concealment and deception techniques are used to hide, blend, disguise or disrupt the appearance of military targets. Camouflage involves disguising an asset and can be carried out by draping nets over equipment or painting disruptive patterns on aninstallation to
HUNTING THE BISMARCK RAF Wick, photographed on 22 June 1941. It was from this airfield that Michael Suckling set off at 11.05am on 18 May 1941, on sortie N/0183. His mission: to find the German capital ships Bismarck and Prinz Eugen . Suckling flew first to RAF Sumburgh, at the southern tip of Shetland. German aerial reconnaissance of Scotland was first carried out in 1938, when concealed cameras were mounted in civilian Lufthansa aircraft which ranged across Europe, from Ireland to the Baltic, under the guise of checking potential air routes. NATO TARGET REPORTING CATEGORIES The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) is a defensive alliance of European and North American nations, founded in 1949. Allan has led the growth and development of NCAP since June 2001. A Town Planning graduate of Heriot-Watt University, he worked in public service before his appointment to manage the collection, which was then based at Keele University.. The 70th anniversary of the "Dambusters" Raid fell on 17 May 2013. This was the aerial attack on the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams in Germany during the Second World War, which aimed to cause widespread disruption by flooding to industry and communications in the Ruhrvalley.
