REVIEW: TEENAGE DICK AT THEATER WIT Maybe it was the oddly retro music choices of “We Found Love” (2011) or Flo Rida’s 2007 “Low” (Apple Bottom Jeans) or my own distance from the toxic masculinity of high school, but the play comes across as inauthentic as it does misogynistic, especially in its REVIEW: THE PEARL FISHERS/LYRIC OPERA Okay, no one is going to mistake “The Pearl Fishers” for “Carmen,” that’s for sure. “Carmen” is Bizet’s masterpiece, and one of the greatest and most beloved operas of all time. But in a short career tragically cut down in its prime where we have dozens of ideas for projected operas but only a small LESS DEAD, MORE PAN: A REVIEW OF KILLING GAME AT A RED However, Ionesco goes too far here, not merely pointing out the futility of managing or minimizing our mortality, but portraying the Grim Reaper as the answer to modern hubris and triviality. By siding with death, he reduces life to a cruel joke. ALWAYS LOOK: A PREVIEW OF BEYOND THE BOX 4.3—BLACK HAIR E Yoshinojo Fujima (aka Rika Lin)’s approach to Japanese dance, which respects tradition with the curious eye of a twenty-first century artist, is reflected in the expansive title of her virtual performance at Links Hall, streaming May 15 and 16.. “Black Hair” is the literal translation of “Kurokami,” a popular scene from a classicKabuki play.
REVIEW: MRS. WARREN’S PROFESSION AT PROMETHEAN THEATRE I don’t think I have been so torn about a production in my limited time as a critic. “Mrs. Warren’s Profession,” at Promethean Theatre Ensemble, brings to life the ever-relevant work of George Bernard Shaw, a playwright who can hold up a mirror to today’s blemishes despite having been dead for more than seventy years. REVIEW: MADAMA BUTTERFLY AT LYRIC OPERA OF CHICAGO This production of “Madama Butterfly” is obviously fashioned to invite discussion rather than uninformed permissiveness.
