Mr. Brayton's daughter Alice gave the estate its name because of the profusion of "green animals." She made the estate her permanent residence in 1939. Upon her death in 1972, at the age of 94, Miss Brayton left Green Animals to The Preservation Society of THE ELMS | NEWPORT MANSIONS The Elms is currently closed to the public. The Elms was the summer residence of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind of Philadelphia and New York. Mr. Berwind made his fortune in the coal industry. In 1898, the Berwinds engaged Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer to design a house modeled after the mid-18th century French chateau d'AsnieresSARAH IWANSKI

Marble House is NOT accessible. Marble House was built between 1888 and 1892 for Mr. and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt. It was a summer house, or "cottage," as Newporters called them in remembrance of the modest houses of the early 19th century. But Marble House was much more; it was a social and architectural landmark that set the pace for ROSECLIFF | NEWPORT MANSIONS Rosecliff is now preserved through the generosity of its last private owners, Mr. and Mrs. J. Edgar Monroe, of New Orleans. They gave the house, its furnishings, and an endowment to the Preservation Society in 1971. Scenes from several films have been shot on location at Rosecliff, including The Great Gatsby, True Lies, Amistad and 27Dresses.

Green Animals Topiary Garden will be buzzing this summer when David Rogers’ Big Bugs arrives.Even our famous green giraffe will be looking up at some of these gargantuan visitors! Showcasing tiny pollinators on a massive scale, David Rogers’ Big Bugs includes a 10-foot tall Daddy Long Legs weighing 600 pounds, an 18-foot long Praying Mantis weighing LESLIE B. JONES, DIRECTOR OF MUSEUM AFFAIRS AND CHIEF CURATOR The Preservation Society of Newport County appointed Leslie B. Jones Director of Museum Affairs and Chief Curator in February of 2019. Last admission at 5 p.m. Grounds close at 6p.m.
