HOW TO PLOT A NOVEL: THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE Beginning a plot when “nothing is happening” can be dull. One solution is to begin with the disruptive event in Step 2, and then go back to show how things were in Step 1. Beginning “in the middle of things” is definitely one to consider if you want an effective way to hook your readers from the very first page. ANATOMY OF A NOVEL: CHAPTERS AND PARTS Anatomy of a Novel: Chapters and Parts. Logically, there is no need for chapters in novels at all. You, the writer, could start the book on page one and keep going right to the end. No chapter breaks, no line breaks within each chapter, no “Part One” and “Part Two”, no nothing! Some commentators argue that novel chapters, being the HOW LONG DOES WRITING A NOVEL TAKE? Daily writing stints will keep your creative writing muscle in peak condition, too. (Yes, becoming a writer is just like getting fit: the first day of jogging is torture, but it doesn’t take long to get into shape. But if you run (or write) just once a week, your “shape” will have all but disappeared in seven days.) CAN YOU MAKE MONEY WRITING NOVELS? The answer, of course, is yes. Not only can you make money writing novels, you can make a lot of it. Look at J. K. Rowling and her Harry Potter books. Look at writers like Stephen King and John Grisham. Look at hugely successful indie authors like Mark Dawson. I have no idea how much these novelists earn from their writing, but I bet they WHAT IS LITERARY FICTION & WHAT SETS IT APART? THE FIRST RULE OF CREATING FICTIONAL CHARACTERS Creating fictional characters is a big subject, and something you simply can’t afford to get wrong if you want your novel to be successful. All of the articles in this section will teach you everything you need to know to build great story people in yourimagination.
3RD PERSON VS. 1ST PERSON: WHICH IS BEST? Because a first person character usually tells their story from the future, after the novel’s events are over. (The only exception to that is 1st person present tense, which is a little strange.) That’s not the case in a third person novel. Even writing in the past tense doesn’t destroy this illusion of the events being rooted in the here FINDING A PUBLISHER VS. FINDING AN AGENT Finding a Publisher vs. Finding an Agent. There are two ways of finding a publisher for your novel. The first is submitting the manuscript directly to the publishing house of your choice. The second is finding an agent, who will approach the publisher on your behalf. The question, of course, is which way is best? HOW TO HANDLE FLASHBACKS IN WRITING An obvious way to overcome the problem is to give a flashback a chapter all to itself. And to make the time and place crystal clear at the start of the chapter. If a fresh chapter isn’t desirable or even possible, you have to make doubly sure that the readers are aware of the time and the place. HOW TO WRITE A NOVEL STEP BY STEP When you start out, you’ll mainly be planning. Though still do some writing (30 minutes a day, say) to satisfy your inner-artist, to build up your writing muscle, and to learn more about your story as your characters come to life and act in unexpected ways.. At some point, you’ll know enough about your story to put planning on the back burner and push ahead with completing the first draft. THE FIVE TYPES OF WRITING Narration is the type of writing you use to communicate these events to the reader, which generally speaking will be relatively prosaic and workmanlike writing (as opposed to descriptive writing, which can be fancier and even poetic). The novel’s events will largely consist of characters doing things. This is POINT OF VIEW: THE COMPLETE GUIDE Point of view is probably the largest single area of novel writing that aspiring writers have problems with. More specifically, they can’t decide whether to write in the first person or the third person. Both viewpoints seem so tempting in their different ways, and choosing one over the other can feel like closing the door on a whole world of exciting possibilities. HOW TO DISCOVER YOUR WRITER'S MUSE Again, you need to use both sides of your personality. You need to allow each side to do what it does best at the right time and keep the other side well out of the way while it does it. As a rule of thumb, let the writer’s muse create and the critic attend to the more logical writing tasks. 3. Writing a Novel. WRITING A MULTIPLE VIEWPOINT NOVEL You need a practical method for overcoming the problem, and the most obvious way is to label each chapter with the character’s name. So in a first person dual viewpoint novel, for example, Chapter One might be entitled “Fred”, Chapter Two “Mary”, and so on. Or you could split the novel into parts, with the first part called “Fred WHAT IS THE IDEAL NOVEL LENGTH? 80,000 words is a good length to have in mind for your novel, give or take 20K either way. If you’re drawn to writing much shorter tales, the ideal is to make them part of a series (or to link them in some other way) so that you can publish several of them in something vaguely novel-sized. HOW TO DESCRIBE A 1ST PERSON CHARACTER If they do, they comes across as obnoxiously vain. Or if they’re not such a looker, they come across as vain and deluded. You can describe yourself in a factual way using the “I” of 1st person. Like this, for example. I had brown hair and green eyes. But that’s boring. To make the description interesting, you need to inject some THIRD PERSON POINT OF VIEW ADVANTAGES The advantages of third person point of view I want to talk about here are. It Is More Objective than First Person. It Is Less Claustrophobic. It’s More Immediate. It Gives the Writer More Freedom. The first two advantages are relatively minor ones. The last two are the biggies. And remember: As I showed in the article lookingat the

My name is Harvey Chapman and I’ve been teaching the art and craft of novel writing since 2008. I also love reading and writing fiction (when I can find the time). But it’s the _theory_ of how novels are built that has hooked mefrom an early age.
You know all those writing guides you see in the stores? I’ve been reading them since I was in my teens. I’ve also analyzed hundreds of published novels for technique. And I’ve done plenty of teaching, so I know where beginners need the most help. And Novel Writing Help is the result. HERE’S HOW I WANT YOU TO THINK OF ME… Imagine I’m a friendly stranger you meet in a bar. We get chatting over a drink and you tell me you’re thinking of writing a novel. “I know a thing or two about that,” I say. “Really?” You sit up straighter in your seat. “I’mlistening!”
So I talk. And everything I tell you is right here on this site. And it doesn’t even cost you a beer! READY TO START YOUR STORY? Excellent! Let’s get started… Think of Novel Writing Help like a book. The navigation links are like the chapters in this book. You’ll find a complete list of all pageson the site here
.
Follow them in order and you’ll be getting to grips with your novelin no time.
Good luck on your novel writing adventure. Never be afraid to get intouch .
And if you like what you find here, please give me a social shout-out wherever and whenever you can.– Harvey
