An #ActuallyAutistic Response to Autism Awareness Month I’ve tried so many times to start writing about Autism Awareness Month – no big deal, just a straightforward, concise list of the things about it that #ActuallyAutistic people (especially those of us who are social justice activists) detest, with suggestions for what messages to absorb instead. Easy, right? But I’m ashamed and scared, because I’ve been told my entire life that how I am – how I show up in interaction with other people – is deficient, burdensome, just not quite right. I’m scared that I’ll say it wrong – be too bombastic, ardent or frantic, or too placating, euphemistic, “positive” – and I’ll either fail to speak clearly or I’ll alienate my entire audience. Yup, internalized anti-autistic bias is hard at work in my beleaguered brain. The antidote is to speak anyway. So I’ll try.
Why Some Commonly Used Language Hurts People with Atypical Neurology I am, by cultural standards, perceived to be highly intelligent and reasonably sane. In spite of that, these words hurt me. They hurt me because I know what's underneath my "intelligent" and "sane" surface, and what it costs me energetically to maintain appearances such that I am (marginally) acceptable to society. I am multiply neurodivergent, and most of the words I referenced – in addition to many others – have been used against me at one time or another; not as general insults, but as criticism of self-expression on my part that was deemed confusing or bothersome in some way by someone else. Trauma and Social Justice: Why we can’t talk about one withoutincluding the other
For the past 15 years I have been training yoga teachers, clinicians and other direct service providers to be “trauma informed.” This starts with educating people on the impact of unresolved trauma on individuals and communities. This lens can help us understand why our students might be shut down, or why a client is anxious and mistrustful. This lens asks us to assume that everyone is doing the best they can in the moment, and that most of our behavior is an attempt to regulate ourselves and feel safe and good.WHO WE ARE

We bridge the tools of yoga and self-awareness with effective community action through continuing education. We are so excited to share this beautifully made video of WHO WE ARE at Off the Mat Into the World®. This very special short film was created by our dear friend, community member, and producer, KIRTHINATH.
While this video is a reflection of our work and some of our incredible faculty, we want to name that not all of the communities we are in collaboration with are represented here. Our work is not performative, and much of it is not caught on video or film, but it’s lodged deep in our hearts. At OTM we are constantly growing and building relationships with new leaders and communities. We are humbled to share a snapshot of some of our work, and excited to grow and expand with you in community.WHAT WE DO
Our in-person and online trainings cover topics such as trauma, social justice, connecting passion & purpose, cultural appropriation, body image, and the embodiment of social change work. Our trainings help articulate a vision for leadership and what it looks like to be effective and responsible in one’s activism, while engaging in community and building relationship.THEORY OF CHANGE
Effective and responsible leadership requires critical self-awareness, communication skills, and knowledge of the larger systems (economic, political, and cultural) that impact all of us. The inner work is a necessary part of external transformation. Embodied practices like yoga and meditation are effective tools for this self-awareness as well as tools for remaining grounded in the face of conflict oradversity.
We understand that a systemic analysis of power, privilege, and oppression must guide our leadership so that our work can address the root causes of the issue we wish to address. We support people to be agents of transformational change to shift the status quo toward one that is truly sustainable and equitable for all.MEET OUR FOUNDERS

An international service project, the Seva Challenge built community, provoked awareness and action around global issues, and raised significant funds that supported communities in crisis. With a focus on listening closely to the needs of locals in the recipient country, the Global Seva Challenge program saw incredible success PAST SEVA CHALLENGES2008 | Cambodia

OTM EMPOWERED SEVA CHALLENGE PARTICIPANTS TO RAISE SIGNIFICANT FUNDS THROUGH GRASSROOTS FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNITY BUILDING. The grassroots fundraising process of the Seva Challenge built leadership skills and cultivated dedication and passion for takingdirect action.
The Seva Challenge trips were an opportunity for participants to have an in-depth immersion into trauma-informed cultural awareness, witnessing firsthand the effects of global issues and an inspiring experience of projects that are successful andsustainable.
Participants who raised significant funds were invited to join OTM on a powerful journey called the BARE WITNESS HUMANITARIAN TOUR where they spent two weeks working directly with the organizations their funds helped to support. During these trips, participants connected with local organizations that were meeting short term needs while also identifying long term solutions for underserved areas. After the trip’s completion, OTM and our partner The Village Experience provided guidance and assistance to those participants who continued to work in support of our Seva Challenge partners and projects in that country. ------------------------- 2015 GLOBAL SEVA CHALLENGE: KENYA The Global Seva Challenge 2015 was focused on raising awareness and providing support to women facing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Early Childhood Marriage (ECM) in Kenya.THE ISSUE
It is estimated that, in Kenya alone, more than 40% of women between the ages of 15 and 19 (and over half of women above the age of 35) have been subjected to some form of female genital mutilation (FGM) or early childhood marriage (ECM), which are dangerous, oppressive and potentially fatal for millions of girls worldwide.PARTNERS
Global Seva Challenge efforts are done in solidarity with local community organizers and groups. We were excited to work with the SAMBURU GIRLS FOUNDATION and the TASARU NTOMONOK INITIATIVE , both of whose primary objectives are to rescue girls from child marriage, circumcision, domestic violence, and physical/sexual abuse in Kenya. They also work to offer and educate groups on alternative rites of passageceremonies.
Our longtime friends & partners at THE VILLAGE EXPERIENCE / THE VILLAGE COOPERATIVE (TVE/TVC) coordinated the distribution of funds raised by OTM to our partners in Kenya for these projects. BARE WITNESS HUMANITARIAN TOUR After much evaluation and discussion, OTM founders and staff decided to CANCEL the 2015 humanitarian tour to Kenya due to safety concerns in the country. This was not an easy decision to make, and we strongly support the work that both the Tasaru Ntomonok Initiative and the Samburu Girls Foundation are doing in Kenya. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE SEVA CHALLENGE OVER THEYEARS!
