Victoria the Golden. In 1907 the Premier of Victoria Thomas Bent purchased Victoria the Golden from the artist William Strutt for £120 and presented it to the Victorian Parliamentary Library. Victoria the Golden is celebrated as one of the Parliament’s great treasures and we are excited to have it on display in Gold Rush: 20 Objects, 20Stories.

FREE EXHIBITION AT OLD TREASURY BUILDING Wayward Women? is presented by Old Treasury Building in partnership with Public Record Office Victoria. It was also a time when women and men were judged by very different moral standards. While a man’s indiscretions might be ignored, even expected, ‘fallen women’ were often judged harshly, at least by officialdom. MADAME BRUSSELS- WAYWARD WOMEN? Alluvial gold. Mining shallow alluvial gold was straightforward. All you needed was a regular water supply, picks and shovels, pans, and a cradle like the one here. The top of the cradle was filled with soil and water, then rocked forcing water and soil through the sieve, leaving any gold behind. As casualty lists grew and voluntary enlistments slowed, Hughes and others feared that it would be impossible to maintain Australia's divisions at the front, reflecting poorly on the country and questioning its courage. In May 1894 15 year-old Margaret Walters appeared before a coroner’s inquest in Drysdale near Geelong, charged with the murder of her new-born daughter.
