WHAT IS PCR
What is PCR? PCR is a method of copying DNA molecules. DNA replication is common in life; for example it takes place inside your own cells every time they divide.OPENPCR ABOUT
About OpenPCR. OpenPCR is a project to develop open source hardware, software, and protocols to perform PCR and Real-Time PCR reactions, and a community dedicated to openness in science and applying the fundamental technologies of PCR to global problemsFEATURES - OPENPCR
Features Precise temperature control. The first step to success with PCR is a thermocycler you can depend on to precisely and reliably create the heat block temperature it is programmed for, and conduct this heat through the tube. OPENPCR DESIGNSEE MORE ON OPENPCR.ORG OPENPCR - OPEN SOURCE, HACKABLE, PERSONAL PCR MACHINE It is essential for most work with DNA, things like exposing fraud at a sushi restaurant, diagnosing diseases including HIV and H1N1, or exploring your own genome. The guy who discovered the PCR process earned a Nobel Prize in 1993, and OpenPCR is now the first open source PCR machine. The price of a traditional PCR machine is around $3,000.OPENPCR SUPPORT
OPENPCR POWERS UP BUT HEATS/COOLS VERY SLOWLY. This problem is commonly caused by failure to seat the 24 pin ATX power connector (from the power supply) fully into the OpenPCR board connector. It can be difficult to set it fully; you may need to support theFLAT ALUMINUM PARTS
We are prototyping 3 1/8″ flat aluminum parts for OpenPCR: 1. ~ 2″ square plate, with holes for 2 screws for the heated lid. Our prototype heated lid involves a peltier, aluminum plate, and thermal pad. 2. ~ 4.25″ square plate for mounting the heat sink and aluminum heat block to one surface. OpenPCR Design Design Goals and Decisions. OpenPCR was designed with three primary goals: Ultra low cost: roughly 1/10th the cost of traditional machinesFEATURES - OPENPCR
Features Precise temperature control. The first step to success with PCR is a thermocycler you can depend on to precisely and reliably create the heat block temperature it is programmed for, and conduct this heat through the tube. THE IMPORTANCE OF SPEED IN PCR The Importance of Speed in PCR. The job of a thermocycler is to implement a set of temperature changes in a reaction volume. The biological requirement for PCR is to implement a set of temperature changes such as this: Repeat 30 times: Denature at 95 C for 30 seconds. Anneal at 64 C for 45 seconds. Extend at 73 C for 45 seconds. DNA IS NOW DIY: OPENPCR SHIPS WORLDWIDE It is essential for most work with DNA, things like exposing fraud at a sushi restaurant, diagnosing diseases including HIV and H1N1, or exploring your own genome. Tom Benedict posted the following rules of thumb on our Dieter Rams 10 Principles for Good Design post: DNA FINGERPRINTING OSAMA BIN LADEN DNA fingerprinting compares a sample of DNA to a previously verified sample. In Osama Bin Laden’s case, there were samples of his relative’s DNA available so a rough DNA fingerprint was on hand. The job of the scientists was to quickly analyze the new DNA sample and see if it matched what was on file. Fingerprinting begins with a DNAsample.

Ecir June 1, 2010 at 4:02 am. Nice tutorials, thanks for the links! They answer a lot of my questions. If I understood correctly, the key thing is to obtain the primers which mark the parts of DNA responsible for tasting Brussels sprouts. MAY | 2010 | OPENPCR All right, lots of presents arriving from USPS and UPS this week. Just went to OSH and Fry’s today, roamed the aisles and grabbed whatever I thought might be useful this weekend, a bunch of floppy drive cable connectors, heat shrink tubing, atx power supply extension cable, silver thermal adhesive, brackets.MACHINING ALUMINUM

The heated lid. Now that the heat sink is ordered, on to the heated lid. The lid is a major component of the OpenPCR machine. It eliminates the mineral oil that screws up experiments of newbies and professionals alike. More importantly, it’s the one part of OpenPCR that you’ll interact with *every* time you do PCR. It needs to bedone right.
