HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Osteoporosis is a chronic age-related disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to fracture. Early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis is essential to help prevent fragility fractures, which can cause severe pain, long-term disability, and early mortality.PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Pathophysiology. Biological causes of osteoporosis. In adults, the daily removal of small amounts of bone mineral, a process called resorption, is balanced by an equal deposition of new mineral in order to maintain bone strength. When this balance tips toward excessive resorption, bones weaken and over time can become brittle and prone toRISK FACTORS
Drinking more than 2 units of alcohol per day increases the risk of fracture. Smoking. Smoking almost doubles the risk of hip fracture compared to risk in non- smokers. Low body mass index. Maintaining a healthy body weight is important - and being underweight with a BMI below 19 is a significant risk factor.SIDE EFFECTS
Side effects. The overall safety profile of osteoporosis treatments for the prevention of fractures is favourable, with the benefit far outweighing the risk. The most common side effects for each drug have been described in each of their respective sections. However, two rare side effects with more severe outcomes, namely atypical femoral CALCIUM - CALCIUM CALCULATOR Calcium is essential for building and maintaining healthy bones at all ages. Find out whether you are getting enough of this important mineral in your daily diet by using this simple calculator. CALCIUM RECOMMENDATIONS Calcium Recommendations. Calcium is a major building-block of bone – the skeleton houses 99% of the body’s calcium stores. The calcium in our bones also acts as a reservoir for maintaining calcium levels in the blood, which is needed for healthy nerves and muscles. The amount of calcium we need changes at different stages in our lives. BURDEN OF OSTEOPOROSIS Burden of Osteoporosis. Fragility fractures due to osteoporosis represent a significant and growing economic burden on healthcare systems and societies worldwide. As the economic stranglehold of fragility fractures tightens on healthcare systems, now is the time to take action and up-scale our response to this silent threat.FRAGILITY FRACTURES
Fragility fractures, which result from low energy trauma, such as a fall from standing height or less, are a sign of underlying osteoporosis. A patient who has sustained one fragility fracture is at high risk of experiencing secondary fractures, especially in the first two years following the initial fracture. Bones are living tissue which have their own blood vessels and are made of various cells, proteins, minerals and vitamins. This structure enables them to grow, transform and repair themselves throughout life. We are born with about 300 soft bones. During childhood and adolescence, cartilage grows and is slowly replaced by hard bone.EPIDEMIOLOGY
