EDMUND MONSIEL
In the last two decades of his life the Polish outsider Edmund Monsiel, an untreated schizophrenic, produced a body of exquisitely detailed outsider art drawings, often with messianic and religious inscriptions. Though he held down a job as a weighbridge operator after he became ill he avoided social contact and was obsessivelyreligious.
MALCOLM MCKESSON
In direct opposition to the outsider myth, though self-taught McKesson came from a privileged background. Born in Monmouth Beach, New Jersey to a wealthy New York City family, he was a Harvard graduate, served in the U.S. Army and was socially well integrated. However, in 1961 he withdrew from his business and social life in order to devote himself to his wife, the poet Madelaine Mason, and toPAUL RUMSEY
Paul Rumsey was born in Essex, England. He works in charcoal on paper, in tones rather than lines. His work is in the tradition of Grotesque, from Bruegel and Arcimboldo to Goya, Redon and Kubin. He calls his work 'metaphoric realism', he uses visual metaphors to portray the world. The image are ambiguous, often both comic and disturbing, many of the ideas coming from dreams. The Henry Boxer MADGE GILL | HENRY BOXER GALLERY The tremendous creative outpourings of the mediumistic artist Madge Gill began after her only daughter died at birth in 1919 and a subsequent illness during which she lost the sight in one eye. Vonn Stropp is one of 123 pseudonyms used by a reclusive man born in Stanwell, England, in 1962. 'In the case of British artist Nick Blinko (b.1961), who has in the past been hospitalised, the need to make pictures is stronger than the desire for the psychic 'stability' brought by therapeutic drugs which adversely affects his ability to work.
