Hi! My name is Meg, and I joined Oxford Insights about two months agoas a consultant.
A bit of background: I’m really interested in technology policy. After finishing my BA in 2017, I worked for a computer science professor for two years, jumping headfirst into the world of social and cultural data science. During my Master’s in Public Policy last year, I completed a work placement on the Smart Cities team for the Mayor of London. Since then, I’ve conducted research on the impact of big data and AI on Canadian privacy law for the McGill Faculty of Law, as well as research on cashless societies and the ‘Splinternet’ for the Cambridge Good Data Initiative.

The UK between Europe and America: fitting artificial intelligence into a unified foreign policyMar 15, 2021

With the release of the UK Government’s Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy due tomorrow, and after months of reports and events reflecting on the UK’s role in the world following Brexit, it is a good time to consider how a unified approach to the UK’s international activity should treat artificial intelligence. That AI policy has multiple international dimensions is almost self-evident. Exactly which of AI’s affordances and capacities should be emphasised in a coherent foreign policy is less obvious.Mar 15, 2021

_In this latest instalment of Oxford Insights’ AI strategy series, we turn our attention to the Latin American region to take a closer look at two neighbours’ approaches to artificial intelligence; Argentina and Uruguay._ In this year’s Government AI Readiness Index,
Uruguay topped the Latin American region, with an overall score of 55.57. Meanwhile, Argentina came in a regional fourth, behind Chile and Colombia, with an overall score of 50.75. As two regional leaders in this sphere, how these neighbouring governments tackle AI is likely to have an impact on the future digital and economic landscape in Latin America more widely.Jan 13, 2021

The ‘Creepiness Test’: when should we worry that AI is makingdecisions for us?
Dec 23, 2020
Richard Stirling
Automated decision-making across sectors and at all levels of government is something that we find instinctively worrying, and it’s not at all clear that we have a good ethical framework for understanding and justifying it. A government seeking to tackle the ethical issues raised by AI and automated decisions needs to consider the problem at different levels.Dec 23, 2020
