The story goes that when the Roman horsemen first saw Pyrrhus’ twenty war elephants, at the battle of Heraclea in 280 BCE, they were so terrorised by these strange creatures, which they had never seen before, that they galloped away and the Roman legions lost the battle. THE WONDERS OF SCOTLAND What is the legacy of the Scottish enlightenment? To answer that, I think one first needs to ask “the legacy for whom?” and also to get clear about the scope of that enlightenment in its own day, and its influence on following generations of Scots thinkers. THE UNNATURAL SELECTION OF CONSCIOUSNESS We have grown accustomed – perhaps too accustomed – to the idea that every characteristic of living creatures has been generated by the operation of natural selection on spontaneous variation; that it is there because it has, or at the very least once had, survival value or was a consequence of other things that had a survival value. LETTER FROM … SOUTH AFRICA The present character of the philosophical community in South Africa is to a large extent the result of two historical causes. One is apartheid – the system of racial separation enforced by the National Party government from 1948 to the early 1990s – and a second is the longstanding separation between white Afrikaners and those of Englishdescent.
