GAPEWORM - POULTRY KEEPER Gapeworm is common in pheasants but also affects chickens, guinea fowl and turkeys. Gapeworms can cause considerable losses in pheasants and turkeys. Gasping for breath or ‘gaping’ as it is known is the biggest sign of gape worm. Shaking of the head and neck stretching are also common. When birds are held, gurgling can often be heard whichIMPACTED CROP
The crop is part of the oesophagus (food pipe) at the base of the neck and is the first stage of digestion for a chicken, it contains food, water and grit (used for digestion). When full, the crop is tennis ball sized. You can sometimes feel the contents of the crop when handling chickens and it can certainly be seen immediately after a chicken has been eating. CROOKED TOES IN CHICKS There are 4 known causes of crooked toes in chicks. Chicks get crooked toes at an early age, usually when they are a couple of weeks old. They will be walking on the sides of their toes.. Note, this is different to Curled Toes in Chickens where the toes curl under and they will be walking on the tops of their toes / nails. If you can identify the cause of crooked toes in your chicks, then you RELEASING DOMESTIC DUCKS INTO THE WILD Releasing Domestic Ducks into the Wild. Zoe Brodie-James investigates the ethics and law of releasing domestic ducks into the wild on the local pond and finds some sad and sometimes illegal scenarios that go on there. Poultry fencing isn’t usually covered in books about keeping chickens, and yet it is a fundamental requirement if you are fencing off an area for your poultry, rather than buying a pre-fabricated run to attach to your chicken coop.. It’s a sad moment, even scary when you discover you have been visited by a fox. Foxes can be cruel to us as poultry keepers and as well as the heartache of MODERN GAME CHICKENS By the 1880’s the Old English Game name was being used by some. They had really grown in popularity and there were a number of divisions around the country with some breeders thinking they shouldn’t be as tall, so they broke away to do their own thing and form their owngroups.

MARANS CHICKENS
Breeding Hints. To improve the colour of Marans eggs, you should only select the darkest brown eggs to hatch. Breeding from hens (and Cocks) that come from dark brown eggs themselves will ensure that you are concentrating this gene in your strain and get more of the same thing.FEEDING CHICKS

Geese can be fed exclusively on grass if you have enough of it and it is of sufficient quality.Grass contains all of the vitamins and minerals geese need when it is fresh in the Spring. Grass should be kept short (about 8cm or 3 inches) which can mean frequent mowing or keeping them within a mixed farm system with larger animals that will graze the longer grass first. Foxes can be cruel to us as poultry keepers and as well as the heartache ofKEEPING TURKEYS
Keeping Turkeys. T urkeys have been kept for many years for their fine table qualities. Black turkeys were introduced to England as long ago as the early 1520’s from Spain and later became known as Norfolk Black turkeys, named after the county of Norfolk where they were kept and became popular forTHE LAVENDER GENE
The lavender variety of poultry is very beautiful. The effect is born from the lavender gene being present in a black fowl and reducing the quantity of pigment allowed to express on each feather; instead of black, the feathers appear a much softer shade of pastel blue.IMPACTED CROP
The crop is part of the oesophagus (food pipe) at the base of the neck and is the first stage of digestion for a chicken, it contains food, water and grit (used for digestion). When full, the crop is tennis ball sized. You can sometimes feel the contents of the crop when handling chickens and it can certainly be seen immediately after a chicken has been eating.FEEDING CHICKS
Food is supplied in a small hopper. A commercially formulated chick crumb should be fed from day old to around 5 or 6 weeks of age. I normally use Fancy Feeds chick crumbs but there are a number of others available. These crumbs are high in protein, to promote growth and also contain processed grains, vitamins and minerals.WRINKLED EGG SHELLS
If the white of an egg (or Albumen as it is correctly known) is watery, it is harder for a shell to be built correctly around it and can cause an egg shell to be wrinkled or have ripples on it.. Wrinkled eggs are typically laid by hens that have at some point been infected by Infectious Bronchitis. As hens get older, the whites in their eggswill get thinner.
BUMBLEFOOT - POULTRY KEEPER Bumblefoot is the common name for a form of pododermatitis which means inflammation of the foot. It is usually caused by a bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. There are usually two causes of Bumblefoot. The first is a wound of the foot, this allows the bacteria to gain entry to the local tissue. The wound then closes over with the bacteria HOW TO DISPOSE OF CHICKENS WHEN THEY DIE The first batch of wood is burnt using an accelerant such as white spirit to ensure it gets really hot. Then a second batch of wood is burnt and once that has got going, a flat section in the wood is made and the hen put in. A spade is the safest way to lower her gently into the flames. It is necessary to candle eggs for fertility when you are incubating eggs artificially using an incubator. Infertile or bad eggs can be discarded so that there is no risk of them going bad and exploding inside the incubator, contaminating the other eggs.FEEDING DUCKLINGS
Feeding Ducklings. Up to 3 weeks old, ducklings should be fed waterfowl starter crumbs or unmedicated chick crumbs. You can start them off the day after hatching by sprinkling a few crumbs on the floor of the brooder near a feeder that they will eventually use. They won’t usually start eating during the first 24-48 hours but don’tworry
