Prix Pictet is proud to launch an interactive exhibition ofConfinement.
In their own compelling images and words, 43 of the more than 90 past shortlisted Prix Pictet photographers give us their personal response to the Covid-19 crisis. The project began with a series of inspiring commissions in partnership with The Guardian, before growing into a book, Confinement, published by teNeues earlier this year. This digital exhibition invites a closer look into each artist’s response, with new unseen images, as they move beyond emerging clichés of deserted cityscapes, overflowing hospitals and returning wildlife. Their images respond to the issues that confront us today and at the same time look to a new future and to new ways of thinking about the world. Fiona Shields, The Guardian’s Head of Photography, gives the first guided tour of the exhibition online. Follow https://confinement.prixpictet.com/ to explore the exhibition and join the tour. Forthcoming tours will be announced on our social media inthe next few weeks.
------------------------- THE NINTH THEME IS _FIRE_ Prix Pictet announces ‘Fire’ as the theme for the ninth cycle of the award. As Chair Stephen Barber explains, the choice of theme istimely.
_“__FIRE__ has hardly been out of the news since the inferno that consumed Notre Dame in Paris in early 2019. We have seen record rainforest blazes in the Amazon, forest and bush fires in Australia and conflagrations in California. It is the fourth element. __FIRE__ destroys and it renews. __FIRE__ means survival, renewal, and economic prosperity. Yet our abuse of this most capricious of elements is the source of most of our environmental woes.”_ Over the coming months the Prix Pictet’s global network of over 300 nominators will identify portfolios of work that align with the ninth theme. These portfolios will be reviewed by the independent Jury chaired by Sir David King. The Fire shortlist will be presented at the Rencontres d’Arles in July 2021. The ninth laureate will be announced at the opening of the award exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London in December 2021.HOPE
The Hope exhibition featuring the work of 12 artists shortlisted for the eighth cycle, Hope, was shown at EPFL
ArtLab in Lausanne, Switzerland in September. The exhibition will travel to Palazzo della Gran Guardia in Verona, International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York, Galleria Carla Sozzani in Milan, the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv and a major museum in Shanghai overthe next 12 months.
In November 2019, Ivorian photographer Joana Choumali was presented with the Eighth Prix Pictet for her series Ça va aller (it will be ok). Her winning series presents photographs taken three weeks after the terrorist attacks in Grand Bassam on Sunday 13th March, 2016. Choumali said ‘This work is a way to address the way Ivorian people deal with trauma and mental health. Each stitch was a way to recover, to lay down the emotions, the loneliness, and mixed feelings I felt. Adding embroidery on these street photographs was an act of channelling hope and resilience.’ Keep up to date with the Hope exhibition tour here.
