WORDS & PHOTO: Donny O’Neill. If we could label the 2020 election cycle in outdoor terms, it certainly falls into the category of type 2 fun. America checked the weather, planned its route, identified threats and prepared to circumvent them. OUR TEAM - PROTECT OUR WINTERS Torrey grew up in Carbondale, Colorado where he forged an early and lasting connection to the ski mountain and outdoors. Torrey works closely with POW’s Executive Director to manage POW’s development strategy, including cultivation of industry partners,PUBLIC LANDS
The policy Details. If public lands were their own country, they would rank fifth in the world for greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, nearly a quarter of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions came from burning fossil fuels extracted from public lands in 2018. But we know that the fossil fuel industry doesn’t own our public lands: we do.CRUSHIT4CLIMATE

PROTECT THE ARCTIC REFUGE How Did We Get Here: In 2017, GOP lawmakers introduced the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, sneaking in a small provision that mandated opening Area 1002 (a 1.5 million acre section of the Coastal Plain within the Arctic Refuge) to oil and gas development. It passed along party lines by an ultra-thin margin: 51-48. Had it been presented as its own bill, it would have required at least 60 votes to move HOW CLIMATE CHANGE WILL IMPACT THE Our 2018 economic report shows how warming temperatures have impacted the snowsports industry since 2001, what the economic value of the industry is today (2015-2016) and what changes we can expect in the future under high and low emissions scenarios.. THE PARIS AGREEMENT FOR DUMMIES: PART 1 The Paris Agreement laid the groundwork for a carbon-neutral future, one where hikers can drive their affordable electric vehicles to the trailhead, where mountain bikers, runners and climbers enjoy their public lands without being surrounded by oil and gas infrastructure and where skiers can enjoy an apr è s beer in a base lodge powered by 100 percent renewable energy.* Our Work

2020 ANNUAL REPORT
2020 was quite the year, eh? It was a bumpy road for us all, but there were also many wins worth celebrating along the way. Our CrushIt4Climate campaign with Strava drew in 434,800 people who crushed it for their outdoor playgrounds. When the pandemic locked us down, we held virtual events where high profile athletes and members of the outdoor members engaged with climate scientists and policymakers. And when the rubber met the road during the most contentious election in our lifetime, POW reached over 33 million potential voters with our civic engagement and GOTV messaging. We checked off some big goals in 2020.Download the report

2018 ECONOMIC REPORT The impacts of climate change are hitting the U.S. winter sports tourism industry particularly hard. This report examines the ways in which warming winters are impacting the economic contributions of winter snowsports tourism to U.S. national and state-level economies.Download the report

ADVOCATE MOTIVATION STUDY In 2019, we embarked on a national consumer research project to fully understand how to increase the number and intensity of climate advocates by thoroughly understanding the motivations of outdoor enthusiasts, and how they can be convinced to do something that we now know is very hard for them to do: fully engage as advocates for policy changes that will alleviate the worst effects of climate change.download the report
