This question has exercised philosophers for as long as there has been philosophy. Human flourishing is presumably both a personal and a political goal – we want ourselves and our loved ones to flourish, and we also want to create institutions that best promote human flourishing. Engagement, which we won’t cover further in this Guide, refers to the need for practitioners to build a positive relationship or therapeutic alliance with their client or patient. We’ll start with the next stage, focusing, which helps the practitioner and HOW TO THINK LIKE A DETECTIVE Step 1: Assume nothing and find out what you really know. To think like an expert detective, you have to embrace a so-called ‘investigative mindset’. The terms ‘possibly’ and ‘could’ should be your watchwords as they are in every real investigation and at every crime scene. In detective handbooks, this is called the ABCprinciple:
