A rich, dynamic universe of public thinking helps to ensure that all sides in public matters will be taken into consideration thus promoting social — as well as economic — innovation. FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS In every case we still want "fair elections" however. The expression "Free and Fair Elections" originated in the first post-apartheid elections in South Africa in 1994. The idea is that the outcome should be generated by a process that gives people free access to their franchise, then fairly calculates the result. ILLEGITIMATE THEATER Theater, viewing and participating in performances, is an ancient yet vital cultural force. Although "legitimate" or mainstream theater has traditionally been a gathering place for the exchange of ideas, it is largely irrelevant in today's world as a tool for social change. APPROPRIATING TECHNOLOGY Black teenagers created the "scratch" sound of rap by appropriating the turntable. Appropriated technology can help the disenfrachised gain social power. But there are three barriers. First, marginalized people often see science and technology as the enemy, a force to be resisted. Second, marginalized people often lack the education and SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS HIP-HOP AND RAP The so-called Hip-Hop Generation was the first to grow up post-segregation, and its members have blazed new trails with few resources. Durable assets in sustainable development can be summarized within four sections: natural capital (natural resource assets), reproducible capital (durable structures or equipment produced by human beings), human capital (the productive potential of human beings), and social capital (norms and institutions that influence the interactions amonghumans).

Digital Storytelling: A cross-boundary method for intergenerational groups in rural communities Abstract: Rural communities face tensions motivated, in part, by (mis)perceptions between homophilous groups. When tensions lead to conflict, crossing boundaries to give all parties an equal voice can be a challenge. This qualitative research project seeks to investigate how Digital Storytelling has the potential to act as an effective bridge across boundaries that occur within rurally-located intergenerational groups. Digital Storytelling, along with a selection of Web 2.0 tools, will be used as a method of communication in tworural Case Studies.

Pattern Cards are FINALLY available! Wednesday, March 23, 2011 - 17:11 We have finally finished the job we started over a year ago! We have created a card for each pattern in _Liberating Voices: A Pattern Language for Communication Revolution_. We are making these cards freely available for download (in three parts at http://www.publicsphereproject.org/digital-resources/) in the hopes that people will use them in creative and productive ways. One approach is to develop a workshop or game that will help lead toeffective projects.
