BREEDING AGE
This has led to recommendations of early breeding to avoid endangering the mother rat. There is no scientific evidence that rats experience pelvic fusing at any age. In the laboratory the traditional breeding age begins at 3-4 months and ends at 10-12 months. Maximum fertility is reached at between 3-10 months. BASIC HEALTH CHECK
3. Eyes: Check the rat’s eyes to assure that they are clear, bright, and free of discharge. Look for cloudiness or ulcerations. Bulging eyes may be indicative of SDAV infection, tumors, or an abscess behind the eye. 4. Ears: Check the rat’s ears for discharge, growths, orunusual odors. 5.
MEDS – RAT GUIDE
Introduction to the Medication Guide. The Rat Medication Guide section of the Rat Guide is designed to provide basic information only, in order to help rat owners better understand the medications prescribed by their veterinarian.Information found here should not be used forany other purpose.
SIGNS OF PAIN IN RATS Signs of pain in rats due to illness, injury, or surgical procedures can vary based on severity. The signs of pain have been listed here by category based on the following: mild to moderate pain, severe or chronic pain, or post-procedure pain. VITAL STATISTICS IN RATS Heart rate/minute. 250 – 493. Blood pressure. 84 – 134/64 mm Hg. Daily urine output (average) 13 – 33 mL/24 hr (or approximately 5.5 mL/100 gm/24h)a. Food Intake. 5 – 6 gm per ea. 100 gm per day. WaterIntake.
MAMMARY TUMOR
The most common mammary tumor found in rats is the mammary fibroadenoma, a benign encapsulated tumor. Rats do well when having these tumors removed, especially since the tumor tends to remain localized and is less invasive. Even though these tumors can be successfully removed they do tend to reoccur. Mammary adenocarcinomasare firmer, more
QUARANTINE – RAT GUIDE Quarantine. The term quarantine means: to separate and isolate to prevent the spread of disease. This includes bacterial infections, viruses, funguses, and parasites (both internal and external). Quarantining at a separate mouse/rat-free location and maintaining a persistent quarantine environment is possibly the most efficient wayto prevent
CONTUSIONS, STRAINS, AND SPRAINS Strains : Apply cold compresses for several minutes intermittently, three or four times a day to decrease swelling. After the first day mild heat may be applied to the injured site to promote absorption. Sprain : Apply cold compresses for several minutes intermittently, three or four times a day the first day of injury to decreaseswelling.
ABSCESS – RAT GUIDE Definition. An abscess is defined as: “A collection of pus in tissue, organs, or a confined space, which is usually caused by a bacterial infection.”. A sterile abscess can be defined as a localized swelling filled with fluid where no organism growth is obtained on culture. SELAMECTIN / REVOLUTION Selamectin is a semisynthetic; macrocyclic lactone anthelmintic obtained from fermentation extracts of the soil microorganism Streptomyces avermitilis. This topical drug is a member of the avermectin class of insecticides. It is a monosaccharide oxime derivative of doramectin, and structurally related to ivermectin. IBUPROFEN – RAT GUIDE Care should be taken if giving to a rat where liver and/or renal impairment is thought to be present. Ibuprofen (like other medications of similar characteristics) should be discontinued prior to any type of surgery, in rats, due to mild interference with clotting. INTRODUCING RATS
Some people use a dab of an aromatic substance, such as vanilla extract, on the rats to mask their scent to each other. For introducing rats that are more territorial or in a group you can bathe them first using baby shampoo or scented Suave shampoo such as peach or raspberry. When adding a rat to a group, bathe the new rat first. IBUPROFEN – RAT GUIDE Care should be taken if giving to a rat where liver and/or renal impairment is thought to be present. Failure of the heart’s ventricles results in blood backing up and congesting in the lungs, liver, abdomen and lower limbs.GUAIFENESIN (OTC)
Guaifenesin is an expectorant. It increases respiratory tract fluid by reducing adhesiveness and surface tension. This in turn helps to thin the mucus making it easier to cough up and remove from the airways. It also acts as a skeletal muscle relaxant, but the exact mechanism of this action is unknown. Guaifenesin has minimal effects on FUROSEMIDE – RAT GUIDE Furosemide is a powerful loop diuretic which inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and chloride, as well as potassium to some degree.
SIGNS OF PAIN IN RATS Signs of pain in rats due to illness, injury, or surgical procedures can vary based on severity. The signs of pain have been listed here by category based on the following: mild to moderate pain, severe or chronic pain, or post-procedure pain.MAMMARY TUMOR

Acetaminophen, a phenol derivative, is both analgesic and antipyretic. It inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins that sensitize pain receptors to stimulation. Unlike aspirin it is not an anti-inflammatory agent.
Ibuprofen (like other medications of similar characteristics) should be discontinued prior to any type of surgery, in rats, due to mild interference with clotting.BREEDING AGE
PNEUMONIA – RAT GUIDE Provide additional nutritional supplement, such as soy baby formula, Ensure, Boost, NutriCal paste (for dogs and cats found in pet store), mashed avocado, and baby foods. If the rat is not willing to eat on its own, provide feeding in an oral syringe every 2 hours being careful to prevent aspiration. SEIZURES – RAT GUIDE It is difficult to predict and prevent seizures in a pet rat. What is important is to ensure their safety at all times, and seek treatment early in an illness or injury. Prevent falls and injuries that could lead to seizures, and maintain an environment that is both healthy and safe should your rat develop seizures. CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE Definition. A condition where the heart fails to adequately pump and circulate blood. It can result from either right side or left side ventricular failure or both.
In addition to diuretic activity it appears to have a direct effect on the blood flow through vasculature beds. It has also been shown to relieve pulmonary congestion, and to reduce filling pressures in theleft
